I bought, sight unseen, what was supposed to be a 70 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevy. It isn't. Its earlier than 70, I'm thinking 67-68. Its got a FF rear end with 10 bolts on the diff cover. Its a four speed which looks like an SM420. The transfer case is a wierd looking deal, not a 203 or 205 or anything I've seen from my Jeep days (D20 or D18). Its kind of a squaty, traingular shaped T-case. I haven't searched the archives here (sorry) and I don't have the early shop manual. Anyone want to tell me if the rear axle is worth keeping and maybe guess as to what the transfer case is. Most of the truck is junk but the hood and some odd parts might be good if anyone near Napa, CA needs them. Thanks.

T-case is a Rockwell 221 bombproof

Yes it is a Rockwell T221, and they aren't really bombproof. They are gear driven, which is a plus though.

Is yours divorced?

The Rockwell's problem is that because it is tall and narrow, the input bearing tends to overheat very easily if you run it even a little low on gear oil, and every Rockwell I've ever seen leaks. The height of the case can help with driveshaft angles if you have a little lift, though. Also, if you ever need a PTO, good luck finding one.

When I pulled the Rockwell out of my GMC to swap a NP205 in, I found the adapter sleeve (mine was a 465/221 married setup) was almost smooth inside, and the output of the tranny was munched too, but that isn't just a Rockwell problem- the 10 spline setup is the problem.

If you buy it and run it, I'd rebuild it and reseal it, and then maybe add an oil sight glass so you can keep an eye on the oil level.

edit: The rearend is commonly called the Eaton, H052, and H072. Pretty neat axle. If you search, there is a lot of info on here about them. You could get them with a factory Detroit Locker (No-Spin).

Thanks guys. The T-case is not divorced. Based on what you guys have said I can at least verify what it is. It was supposed to be working fine. Long story but I know a guy who knows the guy that I got it from. I was hoping for parts to swap onto my 70 blazer, then found out it isn't the same truck.
