69-72 K5 Bikini Tops

Thanks, I definitely won't do this on e-bay - my sole purpose of getting these available is just to give fellow K5 addicts a way to get a bikini top. I don't make a penny from these.

I note your price is a bit higher than what is listed on the above .pdf. Was yours custom that caused the higher price?

No and I had an issue with that. He said there was a price increase and he has no control over anything on the web. I told him it would have been nice if he mentioned it and he didn't seem to care? It almost seemed like it was more bother to deal with these?

My Ebay reference was a joke regarding the green blazer always being posted on ebay with pictures. No problem either way. I posted the pics so everyone would know whether they wanted these or not.

I went to a local upholstery guy and he quoted me $80-90 to make one. 150 seems a bit steep seeing you can get a jeep one for around 70 or 80. I know its custom but still. Guy told me two hours tops to make it. I also planned on making an aluminum or sheet metal strip to bolt to the factory hard top mounts and just putting snaps on it. He said he would do everything except the strip. It would be made out of sunbrella. Not to bitc# about the price, but Im sure not everyone has the money to blow. Top does look nice.

Thanks for the quick posting of the pictures. I'll surely call this guy and see what we can do about adding a little to the back to extend over the back seat for the kids.

I talked to a couple local upholstery shops and they each wanted $500.00 to do this. Seems insane to me.

You may ask him to make the straps longer. I have the footman loops for the strap for my soft top and the bikini straps were not long enough to go to the same place. If you want yours longer to cover the kids the farther you tie the back off the less angle the part after the roll bar will have.

I agree, I was not happy about the $30 price increase. He does include the straps with buckles ($10 maybe). I thought it was reasonable at the $120 price but what was I going to do? Return it and eat shipping?

Yeah he's charging a bit much. The guy at the shop wanted 16 bucks a yard for the material because I was thinking of doing it myself. He told me that he had better snaps then you buy at the store that you just hammer on. I have never made anthing like this so I would kind of want his expertese behind it. I was thinking of having it done so I will let everyone know if he will be willing to do it for others if mine looks good. I just need to get out there and make the strip.

hey icebone,

Is your upholstery guy still in the market for making a bikini top for a 72. I am looking to pick one up ASAP. Also how has your top been holding up? Thanks

Man I havent even got around to it. I ended up putting my hard top back on. I may go back to topless and see if he'll make one. Ill let you know if I do.

ice,

do you have the name of the company that can make those tops. Since I am in the area I just might cruz on down and check out this shop. Thanks

That's a fairly strange avatar Ice, do you some special aggression towards asian school girls or just thier dress code?

Here are some new pics that were posted by a member over at 67-72chevytrucks.com in early July.

That guy has one of the most beautiful K5's around!!!

To anyone who order is going to place an order, I highly recommend calling and speaking with the upholstery man, Harry, prior to placing an order to confirm that price on the order form is still correct. His phone number is on the order form.

As mentioned above, I know there is talk about using some metal tabs to attach the bikini top to the window frame, for those of us with hardtops. Yukon, can you also fabricate these metal tabs? Since there are only two bolt holes in the window frame, would those two brackets provide enough support for the bikini top, against winds at hwy speeds? Thanks

Sorry, I can't fabricate any parts for the bikini top, my only involvement was coordinating with the upholstery shop to make these by getting him an example to work off of, making the order sheet and helping get the word out that this is a source for bikini tops.

If you go to a local upholstery shop they will make one of these fairly cheap. You can get some sheet metal and make a bracket to mount some tabs to. I thought about putting some hooks on the sheet metal and just putting brass loops in the bikini top. That way you could just hook it on and tighten it up.

I just ordered one. There's a two week leadtime at the moment, the guy is going to call me back when it's ready and I can pay for it then. I forgot to ask about the price, but we'll see in a couple weeks.

Yes he will still make them but please call him first to confirm pricing as he seems to change it every year.
