just sold my 73 K5 and now looking for a replacement that will be more of a driver and less of a project.
What are the advantages or disadvantages of purchasing the newer or old style?
I know the square body parts might be easier to find but at the same time they don’t event make replacement rocker panels for the 73-75

Any input or preference appreciated

Far as I know all 73-87 square bodies use the same rocker panels and they are still readily available ..:dunno:

I put rockers on a '75 K5 full vert 2wd I had years ago,the same ones for a pickup ..

The 67-72 trucks seem to not rot away as bad as the square bodies up here--the noses on them rarely rust out around the wheel wells or inner fenders compared to the 73-87 trucks...the first generation trucks are climbing in value rapidly lately and there isn't many around to buy here, that are restoreable and have a clean title..even parts trucks aren't plentiful like they once were..

The 71-72 GM pickups had disc brakes and power steering, while the older ones might not have P/S and will have drums all around..
I liked the interior & dash of the 67-72 trucks better than later ones, but the gas tank behind the seat wasn't a plus..you could always smell gas in my '71 GMC I had despite no leaks..

If I were going first gen I would look at some that are restored all original. I saw one sell on Barrett Jackson for about $15k I think. Then resto-mod it. It looks like the resto-mods have a good ROI on the upgrades while the basic body work is a money loser.

Parts might be easier to come by for the first gen, most everything is out the in the aftermarket now.

Except for the front spring lengths and wheel differances, they are basically the same under the body. The second gen might have a slight advantage frame wise, but I wouldn't consider it much of one.

For a driver definitely 69-72. Could keep it more unmodified and hold on to it as an investment. You know the value is just gona climb.

+1 for first gen if you are ok with the reduced availability of parts. So much cooler and so much more likely to gain value.

Also agree that 73-87 rockers are all the same. I just did my 73 and had no problem with the aftermarket outers. Inners need mods but that is because of k5 vs truck differences, not year.

Which one do you like better?
What's your budget? first gen will cost you a bit more...

I'm not sayin where my supply source is but it's plentiful for parts probably for the rest of my life.

I now have two 67s.
A 4x4 and a slammed short stepside.

The very thing that makes a full vert cool is the very thing that is a problem with daily driving....the top.

All you need is google earth,to look for hidden treasures....

I've found several "private stashes" in my area just using the sattelite google map--one is just a 1/4 mile down my street,I never suspected existed !.. ...local town tax collectors and health department, zoning boards have used this tech to nab some that had "illegal junkyards" hidden on their property..

I think its no coincidence that google takes most of the photos in fall after the trees lose their leaves,so more things will show up that would be hidden otherwise..

That's funny, I remember going out wheeling in my '79 in the middle of summer in Nevada. Guys sitting in the back getting cooked while me and the passenger side we're cool as cucumbers

HAHA! I've got live oaks! Lose their leaves in the spring.

Mostly pine trees in my back yard woods, along with some maples and oaks..so they cant see "everything" in my yard either..have to put things under the pines if I want them to stay out of view.:whistle2:

I like them both and will be topless most of the time with a bikini top or naked..lol
Under 10 k would work best for me and if I found a rust free 69-75 for under $6 k so I could fix and mod myself for my taste that would be perfect,

Found a 75 full vert so pulled the trigger on a trailer heading my way......
Thanks for input
