I'll tag along with ya BigRay. The factory one in my 6.0/6L80 van leads me to believe they are wonky but I know in factory form they can be. No such thing as "crawling" or using both feet in that van. Felt more like an ON/OFF switch.

Ditch the TC and reprogram the lock up
 
The program controlling it is pretty important, so tell us about what application you’re using
 
That's running in my G8, it's a good trans if it's got a good tune. Bad tune they wont last long. Torque management was big on these.

That is not from the transmission but the drive by wire.
 
The 6L80 is fairly strong in stock form, it's weak points are the factory tuning and the factory torque converter. The factory tune has it short shift and lock the converter in 2nd or 3rd gear so you're in 6th by 40mph lugging down the road and you have to put a lot of gas in order for it to kick down. I hated the factory shift points on my '12 6.2/6l80.

The torque converter is set up to allow a few rpm of slip at all times while locked up. Over time the tiny undersized clutch band wears out, and/or the stamped steel housing warps and you get metal on metal and send shards and pieces of clutch material all through the transmission destroying it. This is usually taking place a little over 100k miles in most factory trucks. The solution is an aftermarket torque converter with a billet housing and a solid tune. Most tuners shut off the lock up in 1-4 so only 5th/6th. Some raised shift points and bump the shift times and pressures up a bit it feels like a whole different animal than the way the factory set them up for ride comfort and epa mpgs.

Also in everything '14+ they added a thermostat to the tranny cooler lines to make them run 180°+ which doesn't give much temp margin if working the trans hard. These can be bypassed very easily and people commonly upgrade the cooler itself too.

I sold my nv4500 (hated to but we got in a jam)

I have a Terminator X system and was looking to see if they had a add on trans controller.

Guess I'll find another nv4500 when we get on our feet again.

I never a 6l80 existed until I saw Holleys ad for the controller.
I figured s 4l80 is good, a 6l80 must be betterer! Lol
 
The 6L80 (or 6L90 variant?) In my '13 3500 Express van has been good, although you simply can not drive the thing sporty at all. Seems like an issue with throttle tuning and torque management.
 
That's why don't care for the GMT800 and up trucks.

They won't do what you want without you having to fall in line.
Such as having to smash the brake to shift out of park, or having to unlock the door manually after putting it in park,
Or just having automatic locks in the first place.

I want a truck, not a nanny.
 
The spread of the 6L series doesn't make choosing diff ratios much of a compromise. It's almost like putting another gear above and below what the 4L has. Assuming a big brick of a truck won't ever need to cruise the freeway at 1500RPM, you can pick a low diff ratio and have the gearing options of a 3-speed transmission + a doubler.

Unfortunately, GM used this logic to delete low range in some of the trucks :doah: . As stated, the trans is good, but hampered by stock calibration. Using an aftermarket controller (presumably in conjunction with the internal controller), that problem can be eliminated. It's rated for 550lb-ft, but it's likely that's taking torque management into account (i.e. torque is reduced during shifts). Since you won't have DoD, much of the wear on the torque converter is eliminated (it unlocks the converter on every cycle in/out of 4-cyl mode).

You have to hit the brake to get out of park in everything since the mid 90's.

The lock settings can be changed with the buttons on the instrument panel.

I have 2 identical truck 1 nv4500 and 1 4L80 . I love them both and like each 1 for there own aspects .

Good find and should be nice for the truck .
