It seems like most people put 6x9s in the rear of burbs and K5s, but I've never heard an explanation of why to pick them versus a 6.5" or other round speaker. Opinions please, thanks.

I thibk b/c the 6x9 offers a larger woofer cone to get a little deeper bass.

Get a seperate 6.5" woofer & tweeter(component set) run an amp and they'll sound even better

I plan to run a set of components in the front for sure, but I wasn't sure if I'd just be throwing money away in the back, or if it'd really contribute to the overall sound. Is it really worth the $ to run components vs a nice 6.5" coaxial in the rear? The only people who sit in the back are little people, and they'd rather have headphones on and be watching a movie anyways. What do you think?

Do NOT spend alot on rear speakers. The front speakers should dominate the system, not compete with the rears. Remember, we listen to stereo recordings, 2-channel, not 4. Adding 2 rear channels actually hurts stereo imaging performance. Even when talking to someone who prefers the sound of strong rears, I never recommend spending alot of cash on them. Rear fidelity? Not too important, again the front stage should dominate the system.

Pop some decent coax's back there, whatever size you want, and call it good.

Good to know. I'm sooo glad I asked. That'll save me some money, or allow a little more for the fronts. Thanks. :D

Awesome, glad I helped. :) And you ahve the exact right thinking imo, spend most of your speaker fund cash on the fronts, leaving just enough for decent/good rears.

There is a very good booklet on general car stereo. "Killer Car Stereo on a Budget" by Daniel Fergusson. Its out-of-print, but plenty of E-places to find it.
In my Burb I just replaced the stock dash and the rear quarter speakers with quality speakers. This with a $100 Kenwood head with 4X12W. Added to that is an amp/crossover feeding a Bazooka in the RR.
Huh? What? Meaning of life? Sure, just a minute. Where are we going?
:haha:

So putting 4 6x9s in an enclosure in the back (right behind the front seats in the rear interior panel) would be a waste? I'm going to be running a set of Polk 5.25 components in the front kick panels. Doubt I will hook those up to an amp, but I was going to hook the 6x9s up to a little 200w.

Yep, sounds backwards.....

The strongest music will be coming from BEHIND you with that setup. I'd compare that to going to a rock concert and then standing with your back to the stage for the entire show... people just don't do that.

6x9's are a speaker of "convenience". It's almost always easier to find room in the back for a large speaker than up front where it belongs, so people just buy a set of 6x9's and throw them in the rear package shelf area. Doesn't make it right though...
