I never knew they make that low of gears for 1 ton axles. Anyone know of any info on that low of gears. Is 7.17 going to be strong enough in our "small axles". Post your ideas , just trying to see what u guys think.

What 85mudblazin said... The lowest available gears at the moment for 14FF's is 5.13's. 5.38's are supposed to be out soon and there are rumors out that there may be one more lower alternative. But nothing close to 7.17's unless you go with a Dana 70.

I saw them on ebay about 3 years ago and trying to find them again, could they even be made to go that low.

As already stated by 2 other people, there has never been anything lower than 5.13 available for the 14-bolt.

From my understanding there are clearance issues when trying to go to anything lower than 5.13, with speculation as to whether any clearaning inside the housing will be necessary for 5.38s.

yep, if you want anything lower than 5.13s... get a D70. D80s might go that low too, not sure. Of course, there are always rockers at 6.72... or mogs at 7+:1...

I hate to rain on your parade but like the others have said 7.17's for a 14FF just ain't so - not ever ! If someone posted such a thing on e-bay they were in-correct or just plain talking trash.

IIRC when I read a post on Pirate it said that mods to the housing are neccessary to run 5.38's. If you want gears lower than that, run a dana piece.

there was a 6.17 for the eaton H110 axles(11,000lb axle), was an optional and low numbers available axle for the 72 older c-30's(over the standard and common H072 axles)

and is probably in a ton of the old c50 and/or c-60's

maybe the 7.17 is actually the 6.17

The axle in question is a 14 FF not a H110 or H072.
From what I have learned the H110 offered a 6.17 and U2SLOW found some literature that supports the H072 coming with a 5.83 gear instead of the previously believed 5.14 max gear.
But , for this topic we are all talking about the 1973 on up 14FF and such high numerical gear ratio's just don't exist .

I have an axle in my GMC K35 sierra grande thay work out to being 6.50 or something like that.
4000rpm at 57mph with 265 75 r16s (31.6")
I have scoured the internet trying to figure out how... front axle is a dana 60 truvk was originally 4.56 but has obviously been regears stupid.
Rear axle has 14 bolts too.

Take the cover off and see.
But I expect it to be in low range.

I run 5.87 gears and they can over power the brakes at times when I'm in low/low.....With 7.17 you would have to put it in neutral to have any hope of stopping.

I also am running the 5.86 gears in dana 60s but not sure how itll act with 5.3 and th350 with 203/205. I had them in a 94 tracker with the 4cyl and duel tcase with a 160:1 final crawl with manul trans before.
