7.4 Big block

motor

put a mass air flow sensor. bbk throttle body 160 stat. get a hyptertech programmer. i just put a ati procharger on my truck and it dynoed at 549 lbs. and 408 hp at the wheels. yes i DO have the dyno papers

I just read in Street Trucks magazine of them installing an Accel Billet tech Distributor with plugs and wires to match on a 99 Chevy 2500 p/u with a 5.7L and gaining 28 HP. I know the motor is a 5.7L but what will work on a 5.7L works on a 7.4 as far as add-on performance goes, especially 88-99 GM trucks. Anyway might be something to check out.

Yeah as I'm approaching 90k miles I'm thinking I should start with a tune up before anything else...

how much money was the procharger? where can i find one online?

so the MAF sensors just let more air into the engine? so do you have to do a program with a MAF to compensate for the extra air thats now in the combustion chamber?

Maf

do you dont need to reprogram your truck. but programing your truck helps in little ways and in turn it does add up.

the superchager was 4800.00 and another 590 in labor to get it put on.

you know, numerically lower gears could really help with normal use ( not sure about towing though). I have a 71 Lemans (4300 lbs with me in it) with a 455 and I have 3.55 gears in the rear. Everyone laughs at me and says thats pathetic. But with over 500 ftlbs of torque, anything higher than 3.55's or 3.73's just wind out too fast. Ive driven big block cars with 4 plus ratios and it's just too much. I'm assuming thats why Toyota's and little 4cyl trucks always have 4.56's in DD trucks! Need all the torque multiplication they can get:haha:

just my 2 cents :D

BTW, that's sweet that you have a 454 in your truck! I never see them around here, always 350's

Wow, I forgot about this thread... Well I guess it still applies b/c the new dd/tow rig has a 7.4L big block too. :)

The list of upgrades for this big block are... porting the stock MAF sensor, getting a new filter, a custom tune from Justin @ Black Bear Performance and to wrap it up a set of headers into a y pipe into a high flow cat and flowmaster/magnaflow (haven't decided yet)...
