7/8 hex tool for kingpins

My rebuild kits will be in next week so I am in need of one of those big 7/8 hex tools to remove and install kingpins. If you only have one we could even work out a borrow deal o something. Hopefully I wont need one again for awhile:wink1:
 
Go to your local hardware store and buy a 7/8" allen wrench then cut off a length of it and use it in a 7/8" socket. That's what i did and it works perfect.
 
FYI . . . if you have a problem getting them out, you may need to heat up the "C" around the kingpin. I've had some come off with a little persuation, but I've also had to heat some up. Don't go crazy with the heat though!
 
Nah do what 4x4high said and hit that bitch like it owes you money:D. If mine wasn't so heavy I would ship it up to you as I won't be needing it right away. It is 7/8" Chrome Molly machined from 1.25" round stock and then heat treated. It is about 12" long:D. If you have no other luck let me know and we can see what we can figure out.

Have you found a solution to this yet? If you still need a 7/8" allen then i can just cut you off a length of the one i bought and send it to you. All you'll need then is a 7/8" 6 point socket to drive it with. :thumb:
 
Also a 7/8 tall acorn lug nut will work well.

This is what I am going to attempt today. Napa can order me one for $22 but it will take a week. Nobody else in town carries it.

I think the main problem is this thing isn't bolted to anything:eek1: Its gonna be hard to get good leverage.
 
I pulled my king pins when the axle was on the garage floor. I used the 7/8" allen wrench and my hydraulic floor jack handle as a cheater bar. Like i said, if you need i can chop off a section of the allen wrench i used then you just put it in a socket. The problem with using the lug nut is if you don't screw a lug bolt into the nut the nut will shatter.
 
Mine is laying on the floor as well. How do you keep it from moving around with a big cheater bar on it?

I had my dad over helping me. He just kinda held it from moving all over the place. It also helps if you are pulling in such a way that the leverage is pulling the axle towards the floor.

Another thing to make it eaiser is to heat the king pin rather than the "C" I usually weld inside the king pin till it turns red, when it cools it will shrink and come out much easier.

Well I tried the lugnut thing. I have the axle laying on the floor against my tire and chained to my frame on both ends so it can't rotate. I broke 2 half inch drive breaker bars and a 3/4 to 1/2 step down. I got a 3/4 drive 7/8 12 point socket and now I am rounding the lug nuts:mad:
