Working on finishing up the ls swap. I picked up a 99 chevy gas tank with fuel and sending unit in the tank. It does not fit. It hits the rear brake line. Which gas tank are you guys using that fits and works with the wiring harness. I have searched but not found a clear answer. Do you guys know if a gas tank from a 87-89 will work and fit?

Thanks for the help fellas

I used an external fuel pump mounted on the frame rail for my swap, but it was suggested in my build thread that I use EP381 delco pump in a tbi sending unit and tank.

I was under the impression that the later model tanks were wider than ours but I haven't checked it out personally.

I saw someone with a later model TBI tank in a first gen truck frame and it fit, but the fill and sending unit needed to be moved to the other side. Sounds worse than it looked.

I was wondering if it would work. I figured i would just plumb it to fill on the other side. Was hoping to find out what works instwad of buying different ones.
Thanks for the response.

I wonder if an older G series van tank would fit, like the one in my '81 G-10--those had the filler neck in roughly the same place as the early K5's and look very similar in size, you could likely swap a TBI fuel pump in place of the old sending unit too...the van tanks are available new for about 110 bucks..

I said "I wonder if it would work",which means I do not know for sure if it will--I would bet the dimensions are close, but unless someone else here has tried one,I dont have a definite answer whether the van tank will fit and work..never tried it myself..

I owned a '71 and '72 K5 and noted the gas tanks looked similar to the one in my van..that's why I mentioned the van one as being a possible candidate.

Sometimes you need to think out of the box--my older brother has a '64 Ford Econoline van ,and he needed a new gas tank...back then none were available new for it (now I think some companies are reproducing them, but there are very expensive, over 200 bucks?.)--one day at a swap meet,he walked by a dealer selling new gas tanks for classic cars, and saw one nearly identical to his-it turned out to be one for a 64-66 Mustang!..

It was identical in every way other than the filler neck location...he simply cut a new hole in it in the right spot and soldered in his original filler neck, and cut off the one for a Mustang and soldered a freeze plug into the "stub" left behind..best part was the tank was only 90 bucks, less than a used one from the southwest would have costed to buy and ship to MA,and probably still be leaky!..

Need to replace radiator, (had a hole in it not aware of) radiatorleak.jpg, front brake and transmission hoses, exhaust, still looking to see which muffler I should go with, don't like the loud flowmaster 40 series and not sure of 50, tires those are rotted, and little crap that keeps popping up. Also need to figure out how to connect the 4wd.
Almost done I can see the light.

Are you still running a MAF? If that's it next to the filter, I'd try to move it away, like between the filter and your 90* at the TB. Really should have straight/no turbulent air going though it

Thank You!
Things that need to get done:
- stainless steel brake lines to front
- parking brake cable
- replace radiator
- headlight switch
- tires
- re-route intake
- stereo (need music)

it will be drivable with these mods at least. Then the rest is just personal.
