not to try and steal your post, but how do youy know if the 73 and later axleshaft have been swapped already?im not sure on mine and i would not want to break one on the trail if this would be a good swap for strength.
The 73 and up shafts have the bigger Ujoint in them. Spicer # 5-297. If you were to goto a parts store near you and get a 297 from the counter(or any brand's ujoint that replaces a 297) and tell the parts man you just want to compare the cap size to the one on your rig. most likly he will let you walk out with it to compare it to what you have in you rig. Turn your axel so you can view the cap and you will know right away if yours is smaller than the 297 cap.
Good luck
FWIW, Bill O'Grady a t Vintage Chevy told me that some '72s had the 297 U-joints in them stock. The parts books at some auto parts stores bear this out and a good parts guy will ask you to bring in the U-joints on a '72 so he can match up replacements.
