I have at hand a newly rebuilt 700-R4 but my mechanic tells me to only get an output shaft to be able to do it 4wd, is he accurate???

were could i find an output shaft, besides a junk yard??

what t-case is usually on the 700, 203??? i have a 208 right now and might as well improve.

Yes the main difference is the length of the output shaft. The case itself is also a little different as well since it uses 6 10mm bolts to hold the aluminum torque convertor inspection cover on rather than 4 sheet metal screws holding a stamped steel cover.

AFAIK the 700R4 came with either a 208 or 241 t-case and nothing else.

Yeah i know i ionly need to fing the output shaft, i already have the 208 t-case dont want to spend much so ill stick with it

You'll need the 700R4/208 adapter if you don't have one already. Also your 208 will need to be a 27 spline.

If you need an adapter PM me. On second thought, you can't PM me since you're not a paying member. Just look in my profile and e-mail me.

Im not that familiar with trannys, i already have the 208 on a th350 at the moment so do i need the adapter for the 700R4???....how many splines can the 208 have

The 208 you have that is from a TH350 will be 27 spline but i'm not sure if the input gear is any shorter/longer than needed for one from behind a 700R4. I am pretty certain though that you will need a different adapter. Someone else will chime in i'm sure and let you know about the 208 input shaft being the correct length to work with a 700 and about the adapter.

Usually the 350/208 and 700/208-241 use the same adapter, the difference being the 350 has an additional 2 inch spacer between the trans and the adapter.

You just need a 4wd output shaft and you're set. Check around to the various transmission shops I'm sure someone has an output shaft sitting on a shelf.

Just one of the wierd things they did in the early 80s. Seems like they just used whatever they could find to get the trucks off of the assembly line.

The 4 wheel drive version of the 700R-4 trans case has the bolt holes for the heavy duty cast aluminum flex plate cover to attach to the trans case. This heavy duty cover also has 2 bolt holes at the bottom which are used to attach the braces that run from the cover to the motor mounts. This heavy duty cast cover and these braces are required due to the addition of the transfer case on the 4x4 models. 700R-4 cases do break without these braces (and the one that goes back to the tcase). Do not put a 2 wheel drive 700R-4 trans case in a 4x4. Sell it and get the right trans. The 4x4 version has the letter K cast right into the case. K as in K5 or K10, the 4 wheel drive models. Not smart to waste a lot of time and money adapting it only to have it fail latter.

Im not sure what that will be but can i just have a type of croosmember built for that ho help on the weight

Ditto on what M-4x4-chevy said. Dont use a 2wd 700 in a 4x4. You need the k case. K case is thicker and has bracing to handle the added weight of the Xfer case and heaver loads.
The 2wd tranns case can and will crack under even under light 4x4 use.
You must have the braces in place. Even the k cases will crack without the bracing.

Thanks guys, i was really hoping to be able to do it but now i wont ive also seen there has to be a few other mods im not in the mode for (No $$)
ill stick with my th350, do the 35o use braces as well?

The TH350 uses braces also and so does the TH400. I'm not sure if any of the SM465 stuff used a brace though.
