Cruising at 55mph in 4th TC locked and all of a sudden in just revs like neutral. Luckily I was within 2 miles from home so I turned around and I still had 3rd, after a little I no longer had 3rd. I sure wish I didn't live on top of that hill because after another 1/2 mile I no longer had 2nd! uh oh it was a long hill in 1st but I made it home.

I still have Reverse and 1st gear but that's it. Trans is only a few thousand miles old maybe 5k and fresh fluid just b4 winter but its a hard life in that truck.
Anyone care to make a guess as to what broke?

If you're lucky, it's just the governor gear stripped or broken. Check the fluid first, of course.

I'm curious what you find out because mine did the EXACT same thing a few thousand miles after a rebuild. 4th,3rd and 2nd were gone, but I still had 1st and Reverse. I thought my fluid smelled burnt also. How is your fluid now?

I "fixed" mine by swapping in a TH400. I still have the 700r4 and would like to know what in the hell went wrong! My transmission had sat for several years after the rebuild while I was restoring the truck. So I didn't bother trying to take it back to the shop who rebuilt it.

I asked my buddy about this problem, and he suggested the only way for the governor to go out would be for some junk to get in that area; there is a plastic gear there though so I suppose if it gets hot enough it could start to melt?

But the first thing to check is definitely the fluid! The governor looks pretty easy to get to at least.

The governor gear also breaks or can apple core with corrosion on the drive portion of the output shaft

The governor gear stripped and has no teeth! I would have put money on an internal part failure the way it just let go, But im sorta OK with this problem.
When i rebuilt this tranny the kit came with a new gear and i couldnt really understand why because it seemed slightly softer?? maybe because it was newer??
Anyway i used it and it stripped so the old one is on it now. I checked the cap and it looks fine, its not cupped or deformed but it was new also ( the old one was fused to the case and destroyed upon removal). Im not thrilled with plastic shavings floating around in there so hopefully they will get caught up in the filter.

Great news!

The area where the governor gear is seems to be somewhat isolated from the rest of the trans; and as Greg says I bet there will be no issue with the shavings. If you pull the transfer case off you can get them out, if you are really worried.
