700 R4 3-4 shift

Since I'm running 6 inchs of lift on 35's with 3.73 gears I know I have to run in 3rd until I have the money to get 4.56's. When I put the gear selector in 3rd gear it still shifts into 4th??? I took the truck to a shop to have the trans rebuit because of gear slipage in the 3-4 up shift. However, does this sound like a linkage problem or did the guys at the shop screw up the valve body?

Any advice would help...

Thanks!

Dave

if you have any sort of body lift at all I would suspect linkage first, and before you go back to the tranny shop I would double check your linkage adjustment

3-4 shift

I don't have a body lift and everything seems to be tight... how do you adjust the shift linkage? Do you know of a previous post that explains how?

Thanks!

I did a quick search and didn't come up with a good description on adjusting the shift linkage. Basically if you crawl under your truck and look at the drivers side of the tranny you will see where the linkage is attached. Just an all thread rod that hooks into a U-shaped knob on the side of the trans. If you unhook it you should be able to twist the knob with a screw driver. I put mine all the way down to first gear and adjusted the rod to fit with the gear selector lined up at "1" on the indicator. Then make sure that you can hit all the gears up to park. Hope this helps.

Perfect thanks... I'm at work now so I will try it tonight. I hope like H#!! this fixes it... I don't want to take it back to the shop if I can help it.. I'm sure you understand...

a quick check you might try is pulling the gear selector all the way down to first and see if it holds in first gear. If not I'm betting on your linkage needing adjusted

His problem is not being able to manually lock the truck out of 4th gear. I'm not an expert on TV cable adjusting but if the trans is shifting normally except for when he wants to keep the truck in 3rd gear the TV cable shoud not be a factor

Are you sure it's a 3-4 shift, and not TCC?

Made that mistake on my first(only) 700 truck, I kept feeling this "shift", when I knew it was already in gear, and thought something was wrong. :)

I thaught the same thing about the torque converter, cause I feel an extra shift.... however, while driving down the road at 45-50 mph I put the gear selector to 4th gear and nothing happens... then I move the selector back to third and it doesn't downshift...

Do you have a tach? You could calculate what rpm you should have with your actual tire diameter with 1:1 and 0.7:1 transmission ratios. It's easy to test for the TCC lock by lightly pressing the brake pedal to make it unlock.

But if it clicks into D and drives and then you click it over one more, that has to be 3. With the linkage misadjusted, I would expect 1 and maybe 2 to be gone, but not 3. I suppose it could be really far off, but it seems unlikely.

Remember to ignore the little indicator on the column. They are easily mis-adjusted. Just count the number of detents as you shift from P. You should feel it drop into PRND321. If you can get to all of these and it doesn't pop back out of either P or 1, the linkage is fine.

It won't necessarily shift straight away into o/d. Depends on situation. like Blue says, tap the brake and see if the TCC unlocking and locking is your 'shift' sensation. Sounds like a TCC to me.

OK I checked the shift linkage and that seems to be working correctly. Like Blue85 mentioned I ignored the column and ran thought the gears. I can also definatly feel the truck shift 3 times. Meaning that it does shift to 4th gear when I have it in 3. I have a bit of info on the TV linkage but haven't tried to adjust it yet.

Is there a way to manually send the TCC a voltage to get it to lock? I'm not apposed to hooking up a switch in the cab so I can manually lock it.. I think this might work better off road anyway. Any thoughts?

What a coincidince. With a '90 you can lock the TCC just by putting a jumper in your ALDS connector.

ALDS??? not sure of the acronym

Do you know how this is done?

I mean how much voltage to what pin and which pin goes to ground???
