I have a 700-r4 and was driving along and then all the sudden it stopped shifting into 3rd gear. There were no warning signs and was no slippage, If anyone might
know what might be wrong please let me know thanks.

happy holidays!!,Marshall

well sounds like you toasted your clutch pack, but check and make sure you did not strip out of the governer gear.
That happened to mine except it wouldnt shift at all and it turned out to be that gear.
If it is just not shifting into 2nd then it sounds like your clutch pack is toast which means time for a re-build:crazy:

Most likely it's teh governor.
If it was the clutches, it would slip, but not shifting would be the governor.

if the clutch pack went bad would it take a long time to engage and then slip to beat hell? Ive got a C10 with those caracteristics

governor controls ALL shifts though... if it was the governor, 1-2 shift would be at like 25 MPH

My bad
I didn't read it carefully, I thought he lost 2 & 3. :)

Not absolutely positive for a 700r4 but..
The two bands are usually for 2nd gear, and for L1 and reverse.
The 1-2 shift applies the 2nd gear band, and 2-3 shift releases the 2nd gear band. No 2-3 upshift probably has to do with the clutches not bands.
Also, don't overlook the 2-3 shift valve in the valve body. that could be stuck in its bore.

the 700r4 only has 1 band and its for 2nd and 4th

if it shifts into second it is NOT the governor
if it does not upshift from 2nd, valve stuck or check ball problem.

you are right.. I'm a TH350/400 guy. I just found my clutch/band chart for a 700r4. reverse/1st uses a lo reverse clutch, not a lo reverse band, like the other trannys.
How about when you drop it down to D or 3rd gear? still the same?

The 2-3 shift disengages the 2-4 band.. and applies the 3-4 clutches. 4th gear also uses those 3-4 clutches.
Do you still have 4th? If its slipping at all in 4th, or if it isn't there, its probably your 3-4 clutches. ..or the apply circuit to them. (apply piston seals?)
The other thing could be a stuck 2-3 shift valve like i mentioned earlier.

right, band only applies in reverse and 2nd. clutches generally slip more and more until failure, not at once, so my guess is loss of pressure in the valve body or a broken seal.. which translates to 'rebuild'..
