700-R4 rebuild/build up thread for anyone interested...

Wow that's spooky! Or you live in my neighborhood! I just started pulling parts tonight so I can pull my tranny in the morning and start the process of a TCI maximizer kit and Hughes tow master torque converter. My first tranny rebuild! Wish me luck! Gonna take my time!:thumb:

First I had ever heard of a specific trans for the 'vette! I wonder if the "K" on the truck cases is in the same spot?

Other than case thickness, the output shaft, and year to year variations, I am not aware of anything specific to 4WD 700's. As with everything (which that writeup kind of talks about) I am sure different applications got different calibrations/parts combinations, but in theory it is probably all the same.

There are minor differences across models (like the famous Corvette Servo), but 95% of the rebuild process is the same on all of them. With whichever one you're working with, examine the parts you take out closely to make sure the new parts are equivalent. Sometime the number of clutches/steels is different in the kit and you have to be sure the overall thickness/gap is the same. You will probably not be able to determine 100% what is in your tranny until you tear it apart. Even with a good manual, you have to rely on your own eyes, careful parts handling and common sense.
