I have a 1986 k5 with a 700r4 transmission in it. My question is, just recently my truck has started reving to high RPM's before shifting gears. just the other day my tac went to 5000 rpms before shifting.. what could be the problem?

Check the tv cable adjustment first and be sure the cable is not stuck or wanting to bind. If it is OK then you could have a sticking tv valve, or governor. Sometimes you can free up the tv valve by disconnecting the cable from the carb and yanking on it hard a few times causing the internal linkage to bottom against the valve and hopefully free it. Sounds crude but it usually works on a lightly sticking valve. If that doesn't work out for you, pop the governor out, it is behind the metal cover on the drivers side at the rear of the trans. The cover is about the shape and size of half a baseball. Slip the governor out and clean it and check the internal valve to be sure it moves when you snap the weights together. Don't dent or puncture the cover putting it back in, you can put a very light skim of silicone around it to keep it from leaking. The 700 will act up pretty easily when there is contamination in the system from a parts failure. If these fixes don't work for you, pull the pan and look for excessive metal debris. Good Luck!!

must be that cable cause i detached it and now it shifts fine

It is extremely important to have the cable hooked up and properly adjusted. The cable should be as tight as possible at wide open throttle and have a total travel of about 1 and 1/8 inches from idle to WOT. If the cable is disconnected the trans will not have sufficient pressure and rapid failure will occur.

+1000 on this. I had to have my 700r4 rebuilt because of this. That cable function is VERY important!!!!
