I talked to my tranny shop today about rebuilding a 700R4 for me. The details I gave is that it would be in a Blazer behind a 383 with about 450 ft lbs at 2000 rpm. Would see mainly daily driving with occaisional towing.

He quoted about $800 barring any unforseen parts that need repair. The price includes:

Corvette servo
upgraded sunshell
Towing package
Mild shift kit

Is there anything other upgrades that need to be discussed with him?

BTW this is a reputable shop with a great reputation for street driven as well as track vehicles. I have no problem trusting him to do the rebuild, but am a little unsure of what all I should make sure to have included.

Make sure it is the beast sunshell. I would also make sure he uses kevlar cluthes and band and good steels.

Beast sunshell, is that a brand or a style? What is considered "good" steels? And are the kevar clutches a mandatory or just a good upgrade?

Not sure if Beast is really a brand or type but that's the name given to the strongest sunshell available for the 700R4/4L60E. Any 700 getting a rebuild deserves the best and strongest parts for longevity so yes the kevlar bands and clutches should be a mandatory upgrade.

Okay thanks. Anything else that should be done that isn't already mentioned?

So far I have the Beast sunshell, kevlar clutches, corvette servo, mild shift kit. He said it would have a towing package, I am not sure what that includes and didn't think to ask at the time. I will be going in later this week to drop everything off and get more details/discuss what will be going into the build.

I considered going with Bowtie but they wanted almost $1500 shipped, whereas if I spend $800 to $1000 with a local guy, I can get one on one customer service. And if anything goes wrong I just have the truck towed to his shop and he will fix it. I have done a lot of business with the guy and trust him. I guess the biggest thing I am trying to learn is what is needed for my intended purpose as opposed to trying to make a 700 live behind a built BBC. Is there any real benefit to the K case or is it more myth? I have both K and regular cases and planned to just drop them off and say choose the best to build. Only the regular case is currently a good trans, it came out of a drivable burb.

You dont have to justify going local... I'm just trying to give you as much info BEFORE you go talk to the guy.. I'm sure the guy will steer you in the right direction if he's reputable...

I'd make sure to ask about a good 3/4 upgrade as that is a notoriously weak spot, as is the stock reaction shell mentioned by Scott.. Tho "the beast" is a pretty standard upgrade these days.. and from what I hear in the rumor mill is the K cases are less likely to crack.. My friends non-k case cracked fwiw...

Iwhereas if I spend $800 to $1000 with a local guy, I can get one on one customer service. And if anything goes wrong I just have the truck towed to his shop and he will fix it.

So he is also pulling the transmission? If so, that is a great deal. I thought for $800 with upgrades you were bringing him just the transmission.

No the initial rebuild cost of $800 is with me taking the trans in. It is sitting on the garage floor currently. However once rebuilt and I reinstall it, if there are any problems he will repair it and can have it done within 2 business days. A lot better than trying to ship a "crate" trans back to the bowtie or other company.
