I've now got two K5s from which I have to decide which one I'm gonna build and which one I want to sell. An 89 350/SM465/241 truck or an 86 305/700R/208 truck. I've got a complete 79 K30 350/SM465/205 truck which I'm at the very least gonna take the axles out of and it also has a fairly recent 4 bolt 350 in it. The 86 is actually in better shape than the 89 but, engine and drivetrain wise the 89 seems to be a better starting point with TBI and a bulletproof tranny but the carb'd 305 86 is a perfect candidate for the strong 350 4 bolt I've already got. Stick or auto both have good and bad points. I'd like to run a 205 case just for strength sake. The doubler kit looks like a nice setup but I don't need it. Can a 205 be bolted to a 700R4? If I do decide on the auto I'd like to avoid the 208 and use some sort of stout, fixed yoke case. I know I'm rambling but, I want to cover everything before I start this project. do a search on the topic, its come up a million times. there is a $50-ish spacer that allows you to use a 205 behind a 700r4 if you have a factory TH350/np205 adapter. this is the setup I run, works great. Using the AA short shaft can cause problems, mainly driveshaft/tranny-pan clearance issues.

I would build the 89'. I really like the 89-91' trucks with the intenna, much more attractive grille, black newer style mirrors, and small extra creature comforts. Plus it sounds like it has the best drivetrain. I would swap in the 1 ton stuff, SYE kit for the 241, and go have fun with it. The 241 should be fine if you don't put on really big tires and aren't running a mean motor.
