I've been looking on ebay and seeing blazers and burbans, 90-91, saying they have 700R4s. Now I know 4L60s are renamed 700R4s but are they actually the same thing?

Your title says 4L60E, your thread states 4L60.

Greg Ducato will likely chime in and make the differences clear, but the 4L60E and 4L60 are completely different in terms of just swapping into a rig. "E" being electronic...no TV cable for input, needs a PCM/TCM for control.

700/4L60...there were some major changes in that transmission throughout the years, but I'm not sure if when GM changed the name to 4L60 anything major changed internally, or if it was just the name.

GM's(?) naming convention changed thus the reason it went from 700 to 4L60. 4 forward speeds, Longitudal mounting (RWD), 60 is a relative strength rating. thus why the 4L80E designation is so similar, but is a "stronger" transmission.

Well, I'm doing a 5.3 swap and I'll be needing an NP241C and I've been told the 90-91 Blazers and Suburbans had them in the passenger side drop. I'm just making sure the ones I look at have that t-case. Did the 90-91s all have that t-case?

A 4L60 is exactly the same as a TH700R4.

A 4L60E is much different, but only in shift control.

All 1990-1991 Blazers, Jimmys, and V series Suburbans have NP241C's with a VSS.

The 1990-1991 V20 Suburbans will have a 32 spline input that won't work with a TH700R4/4L60.

Yeah, the 241 with VSS is what I need. I can get a newer 4L60E from another vehicle. Should fit. Those 241s just seem to be rare.

They aren't THAT rare, just watch craigslist for trucks being parted. The '89 is twice as rare. :) I did not have a huge problem finding a couple of 241C's.

You may also be able to find someone willing to swap you parts 9or whole case) if you do happen to stumble upon an '89 and they have a '90-91
