I own a sweet 87 K5. I got it 13 years ago it was a rust bucke. I restored the entire truck. New floors,The works. New 4 bolt main etc. Just needs a good paint job. Never had no problems with the Tranny. About a month ago I drive to Upstate ny to tow back a car and I’m having tranny problems. Everything works except it jumps from 1to 3rd gear when your above 20 mph. No 2nd gear. Replaced Governor, Servo and Tv cable, Fluid and Filter. Also manually 1-3. Are the same as OD. No difference when U shift. I took it to Lee Myles. They said my tranny needs to be rebuilt. 2nd gears blown. No other way. Has anybody have or heard of a similar problem. The truck is 30 +yrs old. I have it 13 years. Dunno if the Tranny was rebuilt prior. I’m Stumped.

was your magnet always clean?

maybe @Greg Ducato will chime in . he knows trans :deal:

side bar : were in upstate did you go ? i am up in the middle by the ny/pa boarder .[/QUOTE I’m waiting for a price. Great. Somethings not right. The Amoco in East Ny Bklyn said it could be a lot of things . It might not need a rebuild. . This Lee Myles I took it too has good write ups. They got the contract to rebuild all the Tranny’s for the Nypd. I need a second opinion. He was too quick for a rebuild

They wanna charge me $2500 for a heavy duty tow package rebuild with shift kit. 2 yr warranty and another 500 to put all new seals in the badly leaking transfer case. All new synthetic fluids in the differentials.

Does it have 4th gear? Do you have a pressure gauge? The easy suspects are the TV cable and the servo. You should check TV by disconnecting the cable from the throttle and measuring the line pressure, but I understand you sometimes hear the pitch of the pump change. Does it shift any differently between light throttle and heavier throttle?

It's possible you lost a seal on the servo. It's not real hard to pull out and check. If you do pull it, it might be possible to check the tab on the band through the servo hole. You may have snapped that tab off. The band can be replaced without a full rebuild. Basically you just have to pull the pump out of the front and pull the servo to get it out.

What does changing differential fluid have to do with transmission problems? The transfer case is not hard to re-seal and could be done at some other time. They're quick to jump to full rebuild because that's what they do. "Repair" is hard to warranty because something else may fail at any time and it can be hard to figure out exactly what's wrong to repair it.

I put a brand new corvette servo,Governor and Gm Tv cable. Very little change. Shifts from 1-3 at 20 mph instead of winding out and not shifting. I towed A trailer over the mountains upstate Ny in OD. Before that problems were intermittent. Thank U so Much for Your input

You still have reverse, right? (If not, it's probably the sunshell and the whole thing needs to be torn down). Since you already put a whole servo assembly in, the problem is probably with the band. But first, did you check the length of the pin on the new servo? There's still the chance you have the wrong apply depth and it's not engaging the band.

For the band, there are a few things that could have happened:
  • Friction material gone - it seems like the transmission would be slipping into 2nd for a bit but apparently it can seem to appear out of the blue
  • Broken band - typically near the apply pin. I suspect there's a way to verify this through the servo hole, but I've never done it.
  • Broken anchor pin - You can access this with the transmission in the truck, but it requires pulling the valve body. That would be totally worth it if you knew that pin had sheared, but based on probabilities it might be better to just pull the tranny and look behind the pump.

I wanna thank U for your input and Knowledge. TheTranny is now being removed and opened up. I will know Monday

I wanna Thank you for your help and Knowledge. I have reverse. No 1-2-3 when shifting. The Tranny guy at Lee Myles also said the bands shot. The tranny’s now removed . I looked at it. It has a big K stamped on it. I was looking into Monster Transmissions. They had a Heavy Duty Tranny for 1800 but I want the Original Tranny that The Truck Came with. Thx for everything and I’ll keep U posted.
