700r4 blowout thread *ITS DONE!* :)

If you decide to have a tranny shipped in from Florida (Mad Dog) hit me up first. I got two shops better than them local that can put something together for you. Between the two of them, they built 90% of the local drag racing scene transmissions and for reference, if you don't run 9's in the 1/4 around here, you won't impress anyone. Unless you got a 11 second full size pickup, which we got plenty of around here too.

If I do that I might as well have a local shop put something together...which I still need to look into. I think I'll go hit up some local shops in the next couple days and talk to them about it.

the gm warranty is just on the tranny so wouldnt think the size/shape of your truck would have any thing to do with it.mine was stock so i wouldnt now but i had a b&m tranny cooler hooked up to the tranny and the service manager didnt ask any questions.

true...I think I'll stick with either BTO or MDT...I know MDT doesn't have the reputation that BTO has but I have liked talking with him. He seems straight up and willing to answer any questions that I have had.
I don't know though...tough decision...I'm sure for what I do (95% street) I can't really go wrong but still...especially b/c its not my money I don't want to regret my decision.

well if you had your 3.08's youd still be able to go like 45 in 1st gear...shouldnt have gone with 4.10's:rolleyes: :haha:

I was just looking at the thread I started when my 700r4 died. Check out your post Avery... so has it been 1,000 miles or what? :haha:

Anyways, there's lots of good suggestions in there, I went with the Corvette Servo, .500 Boost Valve, TransGo Shift Correction Kit, Beast Sun Gear Shell, and Remaned pump from www.eatmyshift.com. They had free shipping at the time and probably still do. I picked up a stock rebuild kit from the local parts place, and had my buddy rebuild it and I installed it myself. Check'em out.

yep that tranny was on borrowed time...I can't believe it made it this far...but then again it is a chevy so what else would you expect :)

Do it yourself man it jsut makes your know your truck way better and youll save boat load on labour on the install. i rented tranny jack for $30 for 2 days to do my last tranny with the help of a good friend and some beer it only cost me a little over a grand for a hoped up 700r4 shift kit corvette servo bigger sun shell and some more goodies. its easy man especially on a truck your height and in your nice weather compared to doing this outside up here on ice. lol not very fun. just do it

take out rear driveshaft
take out front driveshaft
support tranny on jack
take out TC crossmember
disconnect hardlines from tranny & line from TC
unbolt from back of block
slide back then drop down

is that basically the process?

i would do this: (although i havent done a chevy tranny yet.)

completely disconnect everything from tranny, MARK you linkages, wires, drain pan and TC, lines, shafts, and loosen bellhousing bolts.

put it on a jack and seperate trans from motor, then undo the flexplate to TC nuts

then undo the xmember and let er down.

im not looking at mine but thats how i remember it to be. i may have missed something.

avery, a few things before you go buying a trans from anyone... some of the suppliers out there want pressure specs on the trans after its installed BEFORE a road test... this is all well and fine, but if you dont have the tools, make sure you budget yourself... theres nothing to a 700 (ive built my fair share) and theres a lot of aftermarket support for it.. Make sure they give you some of the upgraded and better parts. ask a lot of questions and dont be affraid to tell them your tire sizes and stuff like that... ive heard good things about maddog but be sure to read the fine print on the warrenty before you ever install the trans, some companies will screw you into thinking you got a really bada$$ trans, when all you got was a stock one with a shift kit... let me know if i can be of any help.. nate

Also gotta take the TV cable off -- You don't want to be testing it's tensile strength, lol

Oh, and don't forget to drop the inspection plate cover to un-do the torque converter bolts! You'll make a giant mess if you pull the tranny off the converter...

ok I'll start looking into the possibility of me doing it but as of now I'm still going to let a local shop install it...I know I could do it but to be blunt...I really just don't want to. Plus they'll get it all setup and set the TV. (I know...its "easy" but still).

OK so here is another question that maybe you guys can help me out with as a group so not every guy has to do it...can you guys help me make a list of what parts are the "good" upgrades and what they do?
i.e. pump, servo, etc. I know I always hear this stuff listed but I want to be able to put together a list so I can take it to a local trans shop and get a quote for them pulling it and rebuilding it to 2nd gen 700r4 specs (and some minor upgrades).
I still really like what I'm hearing from MadDog so I'm still keeping him at the top of my list but figured it would be dumb to not check around with the local shops...especially b/c it'll most likely be one of them that does the install.

If you want that 700 to live, you need to regear the axles. The 700 doesn't like low rpms while in od.

that seems a little contradictory...whats wrong with low rpms in OD? 2,000 rpm @ about 70 is too low?

Low is relative. 2k @ 70 is the min. You aren't going to pull that w/ 4.10s and 38s.

There's info on this out there, here's the first one I found...

"The 700R4 transmission will not last in a 4-wheel drive truck that has oversize tires, unless both rear end ratios are changed to allow for the larger tire size. You should be turning at least 2,000 RPM's at 70 miles per hour."

thanks for the link...keep in mind these aren't true 38.5's...they measure out to 37" in reality.
Before she blew thats what I was spinnin' but of course who knows how much it was slipping the entire time.

Avery,

That's symantics, and playing with words. The guys are trying to help you prevent destroying another 700R4 with the wrong gear set. Too low of an RPM @ highway speeds puts strain on the tranny parts to turn the driveshafts and move those meats. I agree with everyone that you need to seriously beef your tranny, paying attention to the servos. Corvette's are a popular application for built 700's that are used with big trucks. I know you don't want to hear this, but you really should be running 4.56's up to 39's, and consider 4.88/5.13's if you are going to go taller. I know those to be accurate with the SM465, so some of the 700 guys might want to tweek the gear ratio's due to the overdrive. You may need to start out at 4.88's.

Peace bro! I'm for ya. Just trying to help out.

Manny

I know you are...and yeah 4.88's are definately in the near future. iono if I agree about play with words though...w/e you want to call it the fact is regardless of what the sidewall says they aren't true 38.5's...will 1.5" make that big of a difference...probably not but its something to keep in mind is all.

Oh btw manny I figured you'd enjoy hearing this but I got my offical letter of acceptance from ACU yesterday...so I'm comin' to Texas!
