To keep it short, I was on my way this morning to the tranny shop to drop the blazer off to have the guy check it out. It's not been great so I figured I'd check on having it rebuilt. Bi drive down the road to the gas station and have it in D. Shifts out of first into second fine... Keeps chugging along, shifts out of second and I have nothing. Press the gas pedal and just hear the engine rev. I put it back down in 2 on my column and the tranny picks back up and starts working again. By then, I'm pulling in to get gas and check the tranny fluid... Bad low so I add some... 3 qts overall. Still acting the same way so I just drove it back home.

Let me know what you think. Just seemed like 3rd gear was gone. The blazer has been sitting a while but was fine before that.

tv cable connected? when mine came disconnected, the same thing happened... i could nurse 3rd gear but barely.. 1st and 2nd are mechanical shifts and 2-3 and 3-4 are hydraulic, controlled by the tv pressure, iirc.

My guess is its smoked. Ive had a few 700's neutral out in 3rd and 4th when they die.

good luck

Yea, when I killed the 700R4 in a corvette I used to have the exact same thing happened. 1st and 2nd were good but 3rd was smoked. Hopefully its something less expensive though.

The TV cable is new and fine. I got it to the tranny guy yesterday so we'll see what he says. I was just wondering why it was fine when I parked it and came back later and it was weird... strange to me

Update: Tranny guy says 3rd and 4th are out. Can rebuild with new parts for $500. If he has to do 1st ans 2nd as well, the total is $850. What are the opinions on only doing half the tranny? I feel like I should tell him to do the whole thing but $850 is a little tight right now.

Let me hear your thoughts...

Should I ask what brand parts he uses and if its an upgrade? He mentioned something about the whole thing being better because it will make it shift better... something like that. (Seems like he mentioned that you could control the pressure with the whole kit?)

The guy said he tore it apart and thought 1-2 gear looked alright so he just replaced 3-4 and put it all back together. I told his worker to give me a call so I could talk to them before they started working on it because I wanted to have a conversation about it before further work was done. They didn't do that... just replaced 3-4 gear and went on... all in one day.

This guy came recommended from a close friend... said he does good work and is very reasonable... so maybe this guy just got in the groove and knocked it out real fast... but it seams a little strange to me... Any thoughts?

Sounds to me like he did good by you, only replaced what needed to be done. Hard to find shops like that these days.

And, going ahead with the repair, he's got your trans all torn down for inspection on a bench. May as well put it back together with the good parts from that point. It's either $500 to get your truck back together and driving or $250 for removal and teardown and you tow it out of there at additional cost. Or, in some cases, I've seen shops buy the broken vehicle from the customer then fix it and sell it. This sounds like a shop that would have told you right off the bat if the truck wasn't worth the $500 repair in the first place.

Well, that's a little reassuring... I don't know anything about transmissions, and this guy does it for a living so I've just got to take his word for it. Hopefully 1-2 gear actually is fine and I don't end up right back there wanting them repaired too. But thanks for the comment... that makes sense and makes me feel better about it.

That was my question that I didn't really get answered... I want to ask him when he calls and see if 1-2 gear does go out, if he can replace them at a later date for 350. I was assuming not but I'm not sure. Thanks for the input.

I'd have him explain what was upgraded/changed/generally done. Lots of little tweaks that can be done to an older 700R4 to make them better. Some parts don't necessarily need rebuilding though.

Sounds like he rebuilt what needed to be done and will keep you motoring. Good enough for a stockish small block but probably not to live behind a monster motor or do trans drops at the strip on Friday night. Betting you'll be fine.

I got the Blazer back this weekend, seems to shift fine. The tranny guy commented on one of my questions about it getting into gear pretty hard at times. He said there was a lot of slack in my rear end which catches hard when you put the tranny in gear. I guess I'll look at that sometime in the future.

Thanks for the help and advice.

Did he adjust the TV cable?

Good to hear it's all setup now.

I didn't actually get to talk to him. Dad went to get it since I had to work Friday. The TV cable had recently been replace and adjusted... it shifts fine going down the road... just "hits" hard when you put it in gear when at rest. It hits harder when you first start it since the rpm's are higher. After it warms up, the rpm's slack down to a normal level and it doesn't seem as bad when you put it in drive. (Or reverse)

Sounds about right.

Couple people have mentioned some tests you can do to make sure the TV cable is adjusted right. How it downshifts in OD or D from 2nd to 1st and when it will downshift if you stomp on it at certain speeds. I'm still confudled over how mine is setup but it does seem to be shifting decent. Not as firm as I'd like but I think it got a stock rebuild and not a performance or towing setup.

When's it coming back up north?

Whenever I actually move and have a place to put it... lol. I think (hope) I'll be moving next month so we'll see. I'd like to fix a few things on it before it gets too cold... I guess we'll see...

Yeah, I hear ya. Figuring out the painting of my buddy's car sometime in the next month. The Blazer's going to be his back up wheels when we do that so it needs to happen sooner rather than later.
