So last weekend I was out wheeling with a buddy and we were hammering on this hill. It never got hot from what I can tell but it has now locked up and nothing will turn in it.
Had to be towed off the trail with the t-case in neutral.
What would cause it to just lock up?
I know it needs some work but I am just wondering what kind of carnage I might see:D

check the reaction shell to if it scattered and sent junk into the planetaries.
also the lo roller clutch race/sprag assy has a tendency to grenade under those conditions

yeah, gotta love these 700's,,,,just had one die on use in our 2wd 1/2 ton last night, tow dollied it like 80 some miles back to the house,,,,,though not as bad as yours, this one still moves,,,even though you have to rev it to like 3000 to move a few feet.

Even WITH the problems from these transmissions, i still won't have anything else if i can help it, as far as i am concerned, if they are taken care of, they will last awhile, but then again, EVERYTHING will die eventually.

with yours being locked up? if something broke, you'd think you'd hear some big bang when it did, tear the pan off and check it out, see what if anything in there looks out of place???

Well before it completely locked up you could rev it up some and it would slam into gear then lock right back up, like somehting in there was just getting turned around.
When it did move it made some nasty noises:D
Ill pull the pan and see if I can see anything.

But I am with you on never going to another tranny.
I thikn for now I am just going to stick another stocker in there but in the mean time slowly build mine up.
I just hate to ditch the gearing for a stronger tranny.

Ready for the carnage?

Must have died from a lack of fluid after you drilled that hole in the pan.

So what parts are we seeing here?

LOL .. yeah those drain holes work alot better with a plug in 'em.

As for the parts.... I'm going to go out on a limb here with my guess. Remember, I'm not a pro mechanic, so this is just speculation at best...

But my guess is:

Internal tranny parts... :thumb:

Yea my screw driver and his friend mr.hammer helped me get the fluid out easier:D

There loosk to be some snap ring material, bearing cage material, and some thin shim looking stuff.

Yum! 700r4 stew.
Might want to check out these guys:http://www.700r4.com they build a strong tranny.
If your tranny is pre 88 vintage it's really not worth rebuilding.
Get a 88 or newer 700 they are stronger. Or buy a GM 4L60.
Also after a catastrophic failure like that...............
Be sure to replace your torque convertor and flush the cooler/ cooling lines out good. If you dont. Your new trans will go boom too.
