So I think I might have a bad governor on my 700r4. How do I see if I have a broek gear tooth or a stock valve? I pulled the governor cover off and all I see is a metal box with 2 flaps on it? Can soneone tell me what I need to do? Thanks.

You can pull that "metal box" straight out.

Be careful, those things are VERY sensitive to dirt, keep it CLEAN.

Bad governor means no upshifts, the gear on the end will usually be shot if it's got a problem.

eMailed you some info. Might even help:D
Git it. Thanks. I was hoping I bought your trans for nothing, since I have 1st and reverse. I was just reading something about checking the TV cable and governor if that happens. Governor hear is in great shape and I was able to pull on the TV cable from where it mounts to the motor and it didn't seem broken. Does the trans go into "Safe" mode. Is there a way to reset it? Any other ideas before I pull the tranny.

Edit: How it went doen in the 1st place. I was driving home and the truck was very slow to get going from a stop (slowe than a normal 6.2). Adter I would get going, it would shift fine, just slow every time I took off from a stop. When I got home, I placed the gear selector in 1st, and it took off fine. So I parked it and the next moring, i wont shift out of 1st. I still have reverse.

With only first and reverse you better start pulling the tranny. Probably have a broken sun shell.

i would pull that gov back out and see if the valve moves when you flap the weights.. nate

Well I pulled the governor. The valve was not moving. SO I swapped in another diesel governor I had. The valve was only moving about a 1/4", is that correct? When to drive it and it still won't shift out of 1st.

nope broken sunshell gives no 2nd 4th and reverse
it sounds like you were having 2nd gear starts before you parked it
leave the engine off and stopmp the gas pedal to the floor hard 5/6 times then start up the truck and go for a drive to see if it upshifts this flooring the pedal hard unsaticks the t.v. valve which has a habit of sticking in the bottom of the bore especially if there is any clutch material in the pan
if this works good then do a fluid/filter change and hope for the best
if it doesnt work drop the pan and check for clutch material in the pan bottom if the pan has lots of material the trans is very likely bad

thanks anyway i have only seen 1 bad sunshell that still had reverse the splines were snapped off after the downward stamping and in rev the endthrust would keep the almost invisible splines engaged with the sun gear but would not give 2nd and 4th

Those were my exact symptoms, no 2nd or 4th but had reverse, 1st and 3rd.

I have the same problem...any thoughts..Im gona try the hard banging the peddle 5/6 times. I talked to an old timer he said the tv cvalve sticks easy..that you need to flush the whole system on a rebuld..so my governor gear is ok...too.
