if you were to build 1,how would you do it?
kit or mix and match
i did look a monster trans and mad dog
my case broke so i'm getting a new case and building one

87-92 model transmission. Use the rebuild kit available from most parts stores for the basics, Trans-Go shift kit, Corvette servo, possibly an upgraded 2/4 band, Trans-Go hardened pump ring kit, Beast sun shell or possibly 4L60E sun shell if you're going to run in 3rd alot.

That should handle 500hp if you keep the fluid changed regularly (offroad and racing requires more frequent changes of fluid due to heat degradation). Add a +2qt pan with a drain plug and keep an eye on the fluid. The 87-92's have the large input spline (30 if memory serves), 9 vein pump for more stable pressures at low RPM, and an improved valve body system.

The Trans-Go pump rings will keep the pump from exploding when you're wheel hopping on a hill climb and RPM's are changing drastically. The Trans-Go shift kit actually reprograms the transmission rather than just blocking off the servos to make it shift harder. It's more in-depth and takes a little time, but if you follow the directions you'll be VERY happy with the way it works.

The 4L60E uses a wider 2/4 gear band for more holding power and there are several aftermarket bands available. Also, the 4L60E uses a hardened sun shell that will stand alot more power and abuse before the splined collar tears free from the body. It's also balanced for a smooth 3rd gear. I use a Beast sun shell in my Camaro. It's not balanced so in 3rd gear it vibrates some, but since it never down shifts on the highway, it's not a problem in it.

This is my build plan for the next 700R4 when my small input 200K mile+ unit fails in my K5.

Wow, good info hear. Is that why my 82 vibrates in third then? :dunno:

Ill use this info when my 2wd 700r goes. The next trans in the bronze truck will have a transfer case hanging off the back though :woot:

I'm not sure about the 82 transmissions. That was the first year of the 700R4, so it's possible that the sun shell wasn't balanced that year. You could also be getting ready for some cataclysmic failure if the shell is busted or the hub is tearing off!

The 700R4 is a very strong transmission if you take your time and do some research on them. You can get some 12 vein pumps for them as well as massive amounts of aftermarket stuff. Be careful what you buy isn't just a 1/2 assed way of doing something though. B&M's shift kits are just that. They put spacers under the accumulators instead of actually changing the hydraulic logic in the transmission. It makes for a hard shift, but one that's doing as much damage as it is good. There are companies out there who claim as much as 1200hp capable 700R4's and maybe higher. The one in my Camaro we built at home and it handles my 400hp easily. Plus the lockup is very nice for interstate driving and gas mileage!

Terry, the pump rotors in a 700 come in 7, 10 and 13 vane design, but never a 12 vane. All sun shells of all years and designs are of such uniform contruction and thickness that they do not require balancing and I have never seen a shell, either factory or aftermarket that has shown any sign of being adjusted for balance by additional weight or by drilling or machining to remove weight. Sprag design and clutch capacity limit this trans to a bit over 600HP reliablity, though there are slight exceptions to this, and possible claims otherwise, the fact is, you can't cheat physics. Just wanted to clear those points up from a professionals perspective, no disrespect intended.

One of the best mods I did to mine was the B&M 1-2 shift valve. It lets the unit drop back into 1st gear after turning a corner or whatever. With a stock unit you just about have to come to a complete stop.

The list of possible upgrades is really long. It's easy to get caught up in the "might as well since I'm in here" mentality and spend too much. The parts should match the vehicle and engine. In stock form you can get 100,000+ miles and that is with a few known weaknesses. Address those and it's even more reliable. If you buy every upgraded part available, you've spent enough to build a 2nd mild transmission.

No problem, I was speaking from memory and considering that the last time I looked into any of this was 3 years ago, I was bound to get some stuff wrong. :D

9 vein pump for more stable pressures......

the 4L60E uses a hardened sun shell It's also balanced for a smooth 3rd gear.......

Edit: already been covered

Late 84 started the 30 spline input.

Pump vanes are 7, 10, and 13. Never heard of a 9 vane.

The Sun Shell is not used in 3rd. (Rotates freely. Not under load)

Not all 4L60E's have the hardened Sun Shell.

Beast sungear shell, 5pinion planetarys, maybe some hardened input/output shafts and a shift kit

Do want to get rid of my TH350

rebuilt stock motor, planing 6" lift 36s its a family hauler and the wife really wants to drive it,so i want to build it for hualing a 16 ft trailer with my 1939 john deer model L and some beach cruiz'n and light big trails
but i want to build for the future what ifs

build it right the first time so the next 100 thousand miles.i wont have to worry about it

thanks for the info

That kit sounds pretty good. It'd be worth a shot, most of that stuff is recognized name brands, all but the shift kit.
