So I swapped my th400(which needed a rebuild and a case, so it was broken) with my stock setup, everything seemed to be good with this 700r4, OD was awesome! Then the grinds came, I thought it was my rearend and drove very softly, then a labored reverse.....awww f%@k was the first thing in my head.
Well I decided I'll swap the fluid and filter and it may be better? So anyway by this time its very screwed feeling.... So I did it, and I drove it around the block. I felt good until SMOKE! The dipstick tube had smoke plooming out of it to the point of where I stopped and got out (don't know if this is normal) thinking there was a fire. Anyway, its gone.
So in my despair I have hit a crossroads....replace it with another 700r4? or go with a th350 or 400. I no longer have any of my stuff invloving my 400 setup, I sold the whole deal to a friends dad who wanted it. Any Ideas? Since the 400 setup came with the truck I have no idea how expensive it would be. I was also thinking about purchasing from monster transmission, are they any good? Thoughts from everyone would be loved.

Did you set the TV cable when it went back in?

What are you missing from a th400 setup?
I should have everything you might need including a good tranny.
Otherwise I would say get a bowtie overdrive tranny and forget about it

Yes, I took it to a tranny shop (a good one) and told them to redo all the vacuum lines and a new tv cable, they said it was good to go. It did have a lot of miles on it. I no longer have my crossmemeber or Th400 to np241 setup. There was something else, but I really have no clue right now I'm a little scrambled.

Theres also a brand new 0 miles sm465 for sale on craigslist for 500, how hard would a swap be?

An SM465 is almost indestructible so even for a rebuilt it's not worth the $500 in my opinion.
And if you are interested in options, come on over and take your pick.
I have a complete setup sm465/205 32 spline for $500 including pedals and bellhousing, but unfortunately they are not hydro.
$450 for the tranny tcase combo though if you want to find yourself the rest.
Also I have th400/208 complete with cross member
I also have 700/208 but not sure how good the tranny is so I am keeping it for a rebuild.
Some guys are coming to my place on Saturday, doing some parts organising, shopping and having a BBQ, so common over and join the fun and meet some guys from this place.:thumb:

I'm low on cash right now, just getting some pricing. I unfortunently have to decline the offer for Saturday, I'd go if I had a ride, but if your ever having another shindig hit me up. What condition is that Th400 in though? I always wanted it back.

If you need to get the ride going again, you can have the th400 now, pay me later.
It was in a low miles running suburban 3/4 ton, it's the HD case with the deep pan.
It's been sitting in my garage for a couple of years so hopefully nothing has gone bad in it.
If there is anything bad in it I would take it back though, so other than having to put it in and maybe having to pull it out, you are not risking much.
:dunno:

Your offer is very generous, but I'll have to decline it's no offense, but I don't like to trouble people in any way. Thank you though for offering to help me out, I haven't seen kindness like that in well forever. My k5 can sit for awhile (i love looking at it). I was seriously thinking about a monster 700r4, just cause I kinda do want to keep it an automatic. Anyone have any experience with these?

I just got my tranny rebuilt. I bought the "Monster in a box" from Monster. Its bada$$. It shifts firm through all the gears. I really like it so far. It also has the Corvette servo which my tranny guy filed something down a hair so it wouldnt shift so hard. It still barks my 38s in 2nd everytime.

In my opinion, Monster is awesome. Thats my opinion though.

Good luck.

If you dont have the funds right now, take up Icemans offer. I dont think he would offer up the tranny if he needed it.

Sweet, I really like a hard ass shift in a tranny. I remember when my truck was fresh from PO it used to shift so hard, I'd light up my 33's going to school everyday and everyday got in trouble for it. Thinking back it was a lot different than it is now. Which rebuild did you do? the 500 pack or the 800? I have a guy that would do it for my old 10 bolt. (WHAT A DEAL!) Should I buy a monster in a box? or should I save for a whole new tranny?

Unless your case is cracked, you dont need a whole new tranny. Just get it rebuilt. I will find out which one I got though. Its somewhere in my build thread, which I havent updated in months.

Well Today my truck actually moved, it can still be driven, just needs to be babied. I was under it all day looking at linkage and stuff trying to see if I was missing anything stupidly obvious out of luck. So I re adjusted everything and nope still grinding, but no smoke this time. I almost had to kill someone(I wasn't in the mood for any sh*t), while driving it around my block. But besides that at least is was a small victory, I can limp somewhere if need be. I'm still going to rebuild it, if I sell some old tires and wheels I should have the kit by tuesday.

I've decided to put a sm465, 205 combo. Besides drives shafts what else will I need? So far I have Tranny, Tcase, crossmember, Bellhousing and clutch, pedals and one question is what am I forgetting, and will I need a new flex plate?

You won't need a new flexplate, but if you want it to run, you will need a flywheel. and a clutch.:D
I can privde you with the clutch, but depending on what engine you have I might or might not have a flywheel for you.

Oh woops, don't I look dumb, I'll edit that out later. I just have a stock 1989 350 tbi, also what should I do about the speedo?

Speedo will not be affected.
I don't have any flywheel for that year 350, but as I said I have clutches, you can take a look at them when you come.

Sounds good, Thanks for helping me out so much. Any idea on what type of flywheel I'll need?

Well your engine is the later model with one piece rear main seal, just go to NAPA and get one.
Or post in the wanted section for a good used one.
I think I know someone who might have one, not sure what year.
