Hey Guys,
Here is a bit of backstory, I bought a rebuilt, Kcase 1989 700r4 to put in my 73 blazer. Got it and the new np205 in this weekend and I am just trying to sort out the peripherals now. I am getting very stuck on the lockup kit. I bought a bunch of parts (torque converter, tv cable, etc) from Monster including the lockup kit and their tech support is being zero help.

Basically, the lockup kit has a plug for the drivers side of the transmission and a pressure sender that you thread into the 4th gear pressure port. My problem is that my tranny is a later casting which doesn't have the 4th gear pressure port.

Monster is trying to tell me that I need to buy and internal lockup kit from them and run that IN ADDITION to the external lockup kit I have which makes no sense because the pressure sender still won't thread into the tranny.

Is there anything I can do to make this external lockup kit work or do I need to figure something else out?

Thanks,
John

Hmmmm, some internet research indicates I can drill and tap the servo cover for the pressure switch if I don't have the 4th gear port.

Can any transmission guru's verify that this is safe?

Not going to be a ton of help, but after spending this money, is there no reason you can't just get the non-ECM controlled lockup parts of a 1982-1986 truck?

That was always my plan on another lockup converter equipped vehicle, prior to deciding to go EFI.

My 85 had the earlier design. It has the pedal switch, external plug, and internal valve thingy. (I didn't install it) My now 89 700 still runs the brake switch and outside plug, but I believe runs a non-ecm valve body.

Before, with the older trans, it shifted into 4th gear and locked up at the same time. Now it has a 4th gear AND lockup for it. Locks only in 4th. I can contact my driveline dude for you, see what he used. My lockup kit came from BTO

Yea, I have seen that brake switch version. Maybe I just need to return the monster kit that I have and get that one from BTO.

I've been doing my homework for a project, looks like this kit is the ticket for pre 89 trannys...the 89's & up do not have the bore in the valve body for it. I have an 89, I need to pull the pan & check...If I do have it I'm going to use it.

It seems to be well respected on the various interweb forums....

FWIW, my 86 burb has no computer at all...it has the 700r4.

oops, reread your post, looks like we're in the same boat...

I know it can be done...just gotta find the way.

It is pretty simple to wire up lockup internally off of a fourth gear presure switch, most transmissions have everything already in place. If you pull the pan and send me a picture of the wiring set up you have I wil be happy to talk you through it. Those external 4th switch set ups are not the way to go in my opinion, especially if you have to drill though and tap the cover. By the way, how are you mating the 700 to the 205 with the longer output shaft of the 4x4 700R4 versus the 350? A spacer? Just curious

Thanks Greg, I will definitely take a picture and send it to you before I do anything else. The truck is at my parents so it will be a couple days before I can get back out there.

As for the mating, I had the stock 350 to 205 adapter and then I bought a 2 inch spacer from ORD. I had to trim about 1/4 inch off the output shaft of the 700r4 and it all fit perfectly.

Just got my second crossmember fabbed last night so all that's left is this lockup issue and some driveshafts.
