i know most of the basics it will take to swap my 208 to a 205, which is coming out of a 76 k20. though there a couple specifics i need some guidance to mount it to my 700r4.

the 205 is coming with a th350 that i am buying, along with the axles i'm picking up. i know i will need an adapter from th350 to 700r4, but i have also read that i would need to do some grinding, which i would rather not do but would if i had to.

i've found a couple adapters:

http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/Quick_Swap_switch_kit_700_to_350_4x4_p/609-00007q35a.htm

i also heard of one from A & Red's transmission shop, part #7Q35A, which the shaft needs to be ground 1/8". thanks to jekbrown for that info from a previous post. i couldn't find this part on their website.

i just called up A&Red's and they said they only get the parts in used, and they are currently out of stock. so i'd like to ask all of you folks what you think the simplest and best solution is.

EDIT: also, before anyone says search posts, that's what i did for about 4 hours in the last 2 days without a conclusive answer

You will need a TH350/205 adapter, and then the teckpak fitzall spacer (7Q35A). Sometimes you have to grind a small amount off of the trans tailshaft. I was setting up a doubler and with the teckpak fitzall spacer i did not have to grind any of the shaft.

Here is the website and specific page for the required spacer. http://www.teckpak.com/spgm.cfm?id=7Q-35A

okay, thanks a whole lot, i'm buying a th350 with the 205 still attached to it. so i'll have the 350-205 adapter, and apparently all i'll need is the adapter? seems pretty.....simple?

do you think it would be necessary to make a crossmember to support the weight of the transfercase, and would i need to get new driveshafts made? if so i'd get the parts to do this soon, and save up for my lift, then do the lift, axles, transfercase, and get driveshafts made to match my setup, all around the same time. i'm a college student and this truck is my DD for work, so i'd need to take a week's vacation or so to get this done, or borrow my dad's truck.....but i'm not so sure he'd be happy with that, after my prior.....incidents with the local and state authorities.

Get the driveshafts with the trans and t case. You can get the rear one cut down and you might have to have the front one lenghtened. Your 208 is a slip yoke and the 205 should be a fixed yoke rear IIRC.

okay i didn't know if i could have that done, i'm getting the driveshafts along with the rest of the drivetrain as well

sorry about reviving a dead-ish thread, but i was sitting in my dorm, bored, looking at craigslist. and i got to wondering, what bolt pattern is my np205? well i looked it up and i'm supposed to have the racetrack pattern....no good.

does this mean i can't bolt it up to my 700r4? or is there something i'm missing?

The figure 8 pattern is the most common pattern and that is what the TH350/205 adapter is and what you need.

That is what I have in mine (700r4/205). The bolt pattern is the same for a 350 and a 700r4 to the adapter.

alright niiiice! i was curious about that and started to worry when i took everything apart i'd be really screwed and unprepared. i have a week to get all the work done, that's all i can afford to take off work and this is my DD

Looks to me like everyone is giving wrong info on this tranny swap. he is not wanting to go with a th350, he is wanting to go with a 700r4. the kit to do this is not the one that is being referenced. that one is for going to a th350 from a 700r4. look closely,7Q-35A Quick-Swap switch kit 700 to 350 4x4. this is what you want, kit: 3-70A at teckpak fitzall's site.

I gave the correct info.

There are 3 different lengths of output shafts on a 2WD TH350 trans and in order to make a TH350 work in place of a 700R4 you have to chose the correct 2WD TH350 and remove the tail housing and then use a 7Q-35A spacer so that the TH350 output shaft sticks out of the case (and spacer) the same distance as the 4WD 700R4.
