My 2nd gen 700r4 tranny won't shift into OD, it is the automatic version. What would be some things to look at? There is no slippage and it still shifts like a brick the day we brought it home. Felt kinda weird cruise n down the highway, at 65 and running 2100 rpm with stock gears and 31's.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it.

Are you sure its going all the way into OD? Maybe your linkage came loose or got stretched so when its in OD according to the dash its really only pulling it into 3rd...just a thought...

Im not sure, I have no way of telling if it's going into od unless by feel and RPM.

Old pic sorry for the crappy quality. reads, P R N D 3 2 1

what year is the tranny? you have 3rd but not 4th? if its not your linkage and your TV cable is set right, you may have a stuck valve in the valve body. does 2nd engauge quickly or does it seem to shift slow?

With those numbers it is going into 4th but your convertor is not locking up. If you were in third you would be about 3000 RPM. I would take it out and manually shift from first all the way to OD and see what it does.

Im not sure on which year the tranny is, but its a newer one. it seems to shift into 2nd normal. Today im going to get on the freeway again and try manualy shifting it.

Thanks guys.

I hope this is nothing big cause im dirt poor. :(

I got it back on the highway. if I manualy shifted it up to 3rd I was runnin about 2400 rpm, when I shifted it into D for over drive it went to 2100.

Well OD is oviously working. If you used to have lower RPM at 65 and now you dont, the torque convertor is not locking up. The waty to test to see if the TC is locking up is to get on the freeway at 65. Tap your brakes with foot still on the gas. TC should unlock when the brakes are applied RPM should go up 300 or so when you tap your brakes then back down if the lock up is working.
If the TC lockup is not working here are some things to check:
Check the wires to the trans to be sure they are plugged in or not broken off.
The brake switch may be bad.
Bad TC lock up solonoid. You have to drop the trans pan to get to it.
Check for trouble codes to make sure the VSS is working.

Thanks thunder, I have a 82 so checking for codes is out. I will have to check these out though, thanks a million.

On 1982 there is a vacuum switch on the firewall that controls TC lock up. Check to make sure it works and the vacuum line is hooked up and in good shape.

Ok thanks, the truck itself is a 82, but the transmission from what my Dad said is a newer, he thinks late 80's.

I have to work tomorrow, but my Dad is going to take a look at this. I will relay the suggestions over.

Thanks again.

There is also a switch on the brake pedal to disengage the TCC. This is not the same switch that turns on the brake lights. They are adjustable and it may be out of adjustment.

You need an electrical signal and a hydraulic signal to lock the TCC.
The hydraulic is all internal to the tranny, but is based on throttle valve, gear and governor (i.e. vehicle speed). All I'm saying here is that a stuck valve can make the clutch not engage.

There are variations on the electrical signal, but typically you have a full-time 12V applied, broken only by the brake pedal switch. Then you also have a signal from the vacuum switch. How many wires go to the transmission? I would question the wiring that was done at the time of the swap, but you say that it did work correctly before.

I have had two different problems cause the TCC not to work:
1) bad solenoid in the tranny
2) bad torque converter clutch

I just took a look under it, on the drivers side there is a 4 prong connector. There are only 3 pins and the connector doesn't seem to stick, it can be very easily pulled out. On the drivers side there is just a green wire hanging off.

Maybe later I can post picture, the camera is somewhere.

:EDIT:

Found out its for the lockup anybody have any tricks to getting it to stick into the connector?

Is the connector on the tranny broken or is it the connector on the harness? The harness end should be easy to replace. NAPA usually stocks some common Weather-Pack connectors. You would just back the old terminals out of the connector body with a small pick and push them into the new connector body and you're done.

The connector on the tranny can also be replaced, but you have to drop the pan to do it. I'm not sure where to get it from.

Maybe for the time being you can just silicone it all together?

Yesterday, I wraped the harness in electrical tape and pushed it in. That seemed to work now im runnin 1500 rpm at 65. :pimp: One of these days I need to get the tranny flushed and all that good stuff so I'll put in a new piece there to.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the help you gave me.

I can't seem to find the part on napa. Autozone wants 190 bucks for the lockup kit that includes everything, they won't sell the plug.
