My 700r4 is leaking from the shift shaft seal, there is what looks to be the brake safety lever attached to the shaft. I have seen there is a snap on tool that slides onto the shaft and threads it self into the seal then you pull it off the shaft.

Is the seal just a standard O-ring? Do auto part stores or any one other than snap-on sell the tool for this?

The gear selector shaft seal is just like a regular oil seal you would find on the wheels or pinions, it is not a O-Ring. Ive never seen a tool to remove it while the shaft was still in place.

I also have not seen the tool you speak of. It would be cool if there is such a thing, but its not that big of a job to change in any case. Pull off the linkage, drop the pan, take the nut off the shaft from the inside, slide the shaft out, pop out the old seal with a screw driver, pound the new one in, reassemble, done!

I've seen such a tool, but dont know who made it or where you can get one---Greg Ducato here would know probably...tool looks like a hollow E-Z out,the spiral kind--they make them for tailshaft seals too....allows you to twist out the old seal on the shift shaft without taking the pan off,or butchering up the case trying to pry it out some other way..

Yes, there is a tool to do this, we use them here every day. We get ours from Trans Tool but they are also sold by K-D and others for less than $30, makes it very simple and quick.

What Greg said, got mine off Amazon for a good price. Just did a search in Amazon and could not find it. This was the part number I had saved in my computer:
Transmission Seal Remover/Installer For GM (KDT2393) Category: Transmission Service Tools and Equipment

The tool it self says "Blue Point YA9348" hope that helps.
