ok so needless to say my 700r in my 86 k5 died and from what i understand they made improvements on the 700r after 86 can these parts be used in my 86 case?

IIRC the change took place in 1988 and the case and valve body are completely different and not interchageable. The later 700R4 also has an auxillary valve body which is the major difference. The internals like clutch and drums and stuff is all the same though AFAIK, it was just the case and valve body that are not interchangeable for obvious reasons.

thanks for the helpful info,it just seems this 700r is a major weak link in the drivetrain,im going to rebuild this one and try to do as many upgrades as possible to make it more reliable and long lasting any ideas?

Servos would be my first thing. Then a higher flow valve body and a 6 plate 3rd gear clutch pack (the 9 plate ones are thin and prone to heat warping). That's what comes off the top of my head, I think you want a tougher sun gear too. It's been a few years for me, but the servos, clutch pack, and valve body address the biggest issues with the tranny. It's actually a great unit for us if you aren't going to throw more than 400-500 hp through it.

Check out s-10, camaro, and vette forums. There's tons of info on there because the use them for racing.

You have to do a lot of careful research to swap valve bodies because there were lots of variations over the years. If you want a certain valve body or you want the auxiliary valve body, it's best to find that year trans and start building from that.

Many of the hard parts inside CAN be swapped. The first things you want to look at are the sprags, the sun shell and the planetaries. You can get these from later model units and drop them in, but in some case there are minor changes that go with them - like swapping a thrust washer for a bushing or something like that. Many of the upgraded parts can be ordered online (try http://www.transmissioncenter.net/highperf700r4.htm or https://www.700r4l60e.com/store/home.php?cat=52).

Personally, I wouldn't dump a lot of cash on these parts if you aren't keeping the transmission for a long time. I would just build it back to stock and take it easy so that when the new tranny goes in, the old one can be sold as a working unit.
