Today my 83 K5 trans started shifting later and harder. Then, in stop and go traffic, no go. If I turn it off for a minute it will engage forward or reverse for a bit, then nothing again. While waiting on a tow I pulled the pan, pink and minimal swarf. Back flushed the filter, no help. Help!

Also noticed fluid level looks high, is it possible to migrate from transfer case?

Yes, but it usually goes to the t case from the tranny

My 86 r4 is dying. I can't keep fluid in it, and I lost 3rd gear. Good thing it's only 3 miles to work. Saving my pennies for a replacement...

Thanks for the replies. So I had it towed to my cabin. Still doing the same thing. Let it sit, it goes right into drive or reverse as normal, drive about 25 feet and it slips, like it's starving for fluid. Let it sit for half and hour, same thing. I did find one post online that said it's the filter so I'm heading out there today with a new one and crossed fingers. I had pulled the pan while waiting for the tow truck, no real swarf to speak of, looked great. One thing...I just had the radiator fixed, they resoldered the tank back on on the side with the trans cooler. Nothing seemed unusual..

Sounds like you have a TV cable that is no longer set properly. Trans fluid can get into the T-case if the T-case input seal is bad but you will never get fluid transfer from the T-case to the trans.

The TV cable feels the same when I pull on it but I'm also going to pull the TV when I have the pan off today and make sure the spring is OK. Regarding the fluid...I don't think it mysteriously rose up, I think it was just the inside of the dipstick tube being wet, although I checked it 20 times (it was a long day...) and always came up high. Next day at my cabin it was back to normal.

I've had a TH350 in a '71 K10 Burb I bought with a "blown transmission" ,lose all gears shortly after start up--it would pull strong and get into third gear, then it went into a "neutral" and lost all gears including reverse..--when I pulled the pan off,I found several valve body bolts lying in the bottom of the pan,and many of the rest were barely finger tight..

Not sure if someone had taken it apart before I bought it in hopes of a quick fix, like a valve body gasket failing or the check balls--but I put all the bolts back in and snugged them down, put the pan back on,dumped the fluid I just drained from it back in,and I took it down the road a good 5 miles each way, while a friend followed me (in case I got stranded and needed a tow home)...it seemed to work OK..

I sold that transmission to a guy I knew who was going to have it rebuilt before using it in his own truck--told me later on,that the guy who rebuilt it said everything looked "normal" inside..no burnt clutches or drums,etc...weird!..:screwy:

Did the filter fall out of the pick up hole? Saw this once, was doing what you describe. When the fluid rose in the pan while sitting, it would work, until the fluid was sucked down shortly after the truck was started. Acting like it's out of fluid.

I got it going last night! It was the filter, dammit. When I got the Blazer a couple years ago I pulled the pan, the ATF looked great with minimal swarf in the pan so I just put it back. Been great since, until the other day. I pulled the pan while waiting for the tow truck, again not much gunk, easily wiped out with a paper towel, fluid not cooked. I ran some gas through the filter backwards, ran right through. I got to thinking about the symptoms and agree is sounds like what you describe above, so I pulled the filter again and this time poured ATF in it the normal direction. Just sat there. Went and bought a new filter, bingo. I'm going to cut the old filter apart and see what's blocking it, again this happened just a few days after the radiator work... Could be a sign of impending trans rebuild, we'll see. First time I have ever had a trans filter plug up, and I've had some trannys with serious gunk in the pan.

Thanks again for all the replies.
