1990 350 700r4 4x4 Blazer. I replaced the detent/t.v cable due to the late shifting and it still does the same thing. A couple of time after adjusting the cable it shifted fine at low rpm then i would stop and it would not shift untill i was high up in the rpms. The cable moves freely and is the second brand new cable i replaced.
Any idea?
Thanks

Fluid level is fine. The tranny has 135,000 on it. I dont know if it has ever been rebuilt.

it doesnt feel like it is slipping. i will start looking for a rebuilt

What brand of cables are they?

I had heard that there are "universal" cables floating around out there, not to mention the poor quality of so much aftermarket stuff. I've seen that first hand.

Delco likely still sells the cable for your trans...

I purchased the universal cable first. it broke trying to set it. then i purchased the delco one and everything fit and worked like the original. Its strange that if i mess with the cable enough it will shift fine for a block or two then it will go back to only shifting when im hard on the throttle or up in the rpms.

That's what lead me to think it may be a poor quality aftermarket, not holding the adjustment. You've verified that it stays where you set it?

Same thing happened to me last summer. Tried replacing the detent/T.V. cable just like you but it didn't solve the problem. The tranny would shift fine some days but eventually it got to the point where it wouldn't leave 1st. I finally caved and got a rebuilt 700R4 installed. Cost about $1700 up here in Canada. The original tranny had about 150,000 miles on it.

Check your governor. If it is sticky or the plastic gear is stripped it will cause late shifting as you describe. It is cheap and easy to replace.
