I have an 86 700r4 that shifts real late out of 1st and won't go into 4th most of the time. I have to get up to almost 30 mph before it slams into 2nd. Nothing slips and oil looked ok for the most part. I thought maybe I had a piece of crap in a valve in the valvebody so I took out the valvebody, took it apart cleaned it and put it all back together with new filter and oil. drove around and it does the same thing. I am thinking the pump isn't building enough pressure but i'm not sure. This all happened all of a sudden. I drove home without any problems parked the truck for 2 days and when I drove it the next time it wouldn't shift. Does anyone have any ideas of what my problem could be?

Could possibly be the governor. It is located behind a large round housing on the back drivers side of the tranny. Common problem is the plastic gear strips out and causes late shifts. Easy to pull out and cheap to fix.

sounds like its on its way out to me 4th is first go, just get it rebuilt and save urself some headaches

I don't think the trans. is shot. 4th gear isn't gone it just takes a long time to go into it will only go into 4 if I have been on the highway for a while and I get the speed up to about 70, but the engine is screaming. Nothing slips at all and when it does shift, it slams in. I pulled the gov. out as far as I could today. All looks ok could not get it all the way out 4 wheel shifter lever is in the way. But I did have to twist it for it to come out as far as it did so I think the gear is still good. 1st to 2nd shifts at about 30 and now today I need to get up to about 42 to go into 3rd any other sugestions I could try

check the tv cable? i know the tighter it is the longer it takes to shift

Thanks, I forgot to mention when I rebulit the valvebody I made sure to adjust the tv cable. This is just a strange problem because it just happened with no warning. Drove one day without any problems parked truck for the weekend went to work on mon. morning and damn thing didn't want to shift.

that happened to me with my old 88 s-10. parked it was fine. drove it the next day and it didnt want to shift. next thing you know i lost over drive. then drive then second. dont want to try to scare you, but sounds like its on its way out to me.

Thats not exactly what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the answer. guess I will be looking for a trans. shortly. This is 86 s-10

Peruse Bowtie Overdrive's site. Experts on the 700 and they have a lot of good info there.
