Hope someone here is enjoying our NW weather...

To my question with background.

I have a 1991 K5 with a 700R4 in it. Last week I lost the 3rd and 4th gears in it and took it to a local shop here in Vancouver, WA to get it rebuilt.

I got it back Friday and drove it to work yesterday. It seemed to drive fine and got me back to Vancouver from PDX to a gas station. About 35 miles on the rebuild at this point. When leaving the gas station, I heard a very soft pop, and lost all gears.

There are no forward or reverse gears, but the transfer case is still able to hold the truck while in Park. Anyone have any idea on what might have happened?

I paid 1600 with taxes to have this thing fixed, and am now sitting at home during the biggest ice/snow storm to hit here in years and cannot go out to play :(

Thanks,
-Shawn

Sounds like a broken sun shell. The sun shell is replaced with an upgraded one called the beast by just about every trans shop around that knows anything about 700R4's. That is a very common failure on 700R4's. Have you tried calling the shop yet to let them know what's going on? If not i would be making a call to them in the morning if i were you.

Oh yeah, I am definitely calling them back. They were closed yesterday, and of course today. I will be waiting for them at their door tomorrow when they open.

With this being a fresh rebuild, do they replace that part, or do they just reuse the old one? Should I be asking for some sort of upgrade?

Thanks for the information on this. Auto trannys are one of the few things I will not do on a vehicle myself.

The sunshell is an item that "normally" would be considered a hard part (a part normally used over) and reused, HOWEVER it is a very common failure point on a 700R4 and MOST shops upgrade it automatically with the beast sun shell.

Thank you again for your time and info. I will inquire into that with them in the morning again.

Have a great holiday season.

Drove back through the Gorge last night, no time to be without a truck! :) Good luck on getting it fixed.

did the ****s put all the converter bolts in had a old 82 blazer with a 6.2 had the tranny rebuilt and put in got 1/2 way home and it just stoped moving. when the shop towed it back they found no converter bolts in it.

Thanks again all for input, but it turned out to the the pump that broke. They did fix it and it is currently working fine, but the truck eats a LOT more gas than it did previous to this whole thing.

I was less than impressed to get my truck back badly damaged from the shop pulling my truck in with a cargo strap wrapped around my bumper, bending the bumper, the trim plate above the bumper, and tearing out wires. Never mind that the K5 has a beefy 2" receiver hitch on the back.

Not only that, but the driver door, having the striker pin cracks in the sheet metal, I guess are a common thing, and a little lazy latch in the door that almost always opens correctly, but once in a blue moon does not open fully, causing the latch to hit the striker pin.

Knowing that, the mechanic finds out the door does that first hand, does not stop to find out WHY the door would not close, continues to slam the door closed until the striker pin is now facing the driver's compartment, and creates new cracks that are about 3Xs larger than what was there when I took the truck in

I will not currently release the name of the shop, but will see how this whole thing plays out. The owner has assured me that he is a good welder and will fix the cracks, replace the bumper and trim, but I will fix the electrical myself.

Sorry for all the trouble you've had with this shop. Let this be a lesson learned as to what shop NOT to visit again. I would recommend getting something in writing that this shop is taking responsibility for the damage and that they are going to repair it. This will make your life a whole lot easier IF the repairs they do aren't satisfactory and you have to take them to court.
