The tranny in the 86 won't go into overdrive. It's supposedly gone through...? I'm running 3:42 gears with 33's on it.

What should I check for?

Yeah, me too. Fluid is full and clean. No burnt smell...

Were you messing with throtle body? TV cable adjustment change? I wouldn't drive it like that or the fluid will smell burnt imo.

If the other shift points seem normal, it's probably not the governor or a TV problem. Since 1st, 2nd and 3rd work, all your clutches are good. How high are you getting the RPM and MPH in 3rd gear? I would guess a valve body issue or a problem with the servo.

But start simple. Do you know for certain it's a 700 (have to ask)? When you count the detents in the shifter are you sure it's in OD and not D? Can you feel each one PRND321? Could be a shifter issue. Ignore the column indicator.

Actually, that did occur to me. I counted positions and crawled under it to visually verify. It is a 700. I haven't messed with it other than the one time a cooler line came loose. It works good, just no o.d.

I hit 75-80 driving it home when I bought it, still wouldn't shift into 4th. The p.o. said it had to go "really fast" to hit o.d.

It's not a big deal right now, most of my driving is here in town. I need it working next year for the U.P. trip with campfire & company.

Take it to a shop before you mess it up permanently would be my advice. The problem could be something simple, like the 4th gear pressure switch, the lockup switch and other things but then again it could be TV related and if you are not aware,a few miles with poor TV setup will turn a 700R4 into a big paperweight in a few short miles.

I've been driving it for 2 years in drive...I'm sure it's something amazingly simple. It works fine other than not going into o.d.

I am thinking hard about a nv4500 for it.

it could use a new tv cable, this one is all stretched out. It didn't even click once when I adjusted it.

I'll do a th400 swap if it goes out. Unless a nv4500 comes my way cheap...

Switch, pan gasket and fluid will set you back less than $50 while you are saving up for that stick swap.

Yeah, that will be this weekends project. I just ran it up the road a bit, it does 60 around 2400 rpms.

Lol I can't complain, it hasn't let me down yet. I'll show it some love & we'll see how it reacts. :pimp:

edit: I'd love to tear one down & rebuild it. I've let auto trannys intimidate me for far too long.

I feel the same way, 50+ years of wrenching and I've never torn one all the way down. But if a younger, well endowed blonde lady could convince me, I'd probably try it.....

got the cable today, I'll throw it on tomorrow. We celebrated our grand daughters 3rd b-day today. Her dad, my son, took us all out to the steak house for dinner. good times....

Theres always a TCI reverse manual valve body..Thats how I took care of the TV cable on my 700r4

Just had the 4th gear pressure solenoid seal issue myself, as was said before it's an easy fix just drop the pan swap it and refill and you have 4th again.
