700r4 rebuild advice

I have same, but a 90 Jimmy, stock axle ratio according to build sticker is 3.42. According to specs some had 3.90 or 3.91, and there were a lot of 3.23. I have the HD Trans with code MD8 with MX0 overdrive, which means a Auto 4 spd, HMD, 470E Super Duty. Sent tranny & transfer case to reputable shop for upgrade to kevlar bands etc. and non-lockup, which required a different torque converter. Rebuild cost for trans & transfer case about $2500. I am doing an engine swap to a 383 strocker with al heads, roller cam, and Holley Sniper system, expect close to 500 hp. Also, lifted 2.5" which required changing rear drive shaft, & steering pitman arm replacement, plus a few other mods.
Nice! That's going to be a badass Jimmy. Sounds a lot like what I was wanting to do with mine except I was thinking about installing an Edelbrock Pro Flo 4. We'll see. Still doing a bunch of research.

MD8 = 700R-4 and was not used for HD applications. The 4L70 version was not available until decades later. Not sure why you would eliminate lock-up, but to each their own. A 3.90 ratio would be a rare bird- probably special order only. Basically they came with 2.73, 3.08, 3.42, and 3.73. 4.10 and 4.56 were mostly in 3/4 and 1-tons.

I have a 2004r built by Art Carr, with non lock up torque converter.
Unfortunately I haven't driven this car in 15 years. When I did I didn't monitor trans temperatures as I do now.
@JeffWithers I would be happy to your trans temps when you get it going.
Not sure 4th gear unlocked would generate more heat than say 3rd or 2nd working same load.

I would suggest either a Proflo 4, or go to Holley Terminator, if you buy that brand. Skip the Sniper, if you were even considering it.
That is merely my suggestion, based on what I have seen from other people's experiences.
I like my Proflo4, it has never done anything goofy for me. I did have an exhaust leak above the O2 sensor mess with me, but that was my own fault.

I had the TCC fail in a 700 and it was fine in 2nd or 3rd gear, but as soon as it dropped to 4th the trans temp gauge quickly climbed past where I was comfortable. That was a little more stall than stock (don't miss that!) and I may have had gears too tall, but the 700 is known to have fairly low flow to the cooler in 4th gear.
