700R4 Rebuild Requests?

Doesn't seem unreasonable for a good 4x4 late core, try and find a "virgin" unit nobody has been into before, if it looks previously built then pass on it

Look to see if it has been painted, silicone around the pump or pump bolts, painted pan, missing pump or pan bolts etc

This trans is 4x4 only, 1987 to 1992, if you are using this in a diesel then swap the governor from the original trans and make sure you use a diesel torque converter as the gas engine has a higher stall speed and weaker damper. Nearly all diesel converters save for a very few 1991-1992 models were 6 lug like your original. The pump casting number should end in "732" and there is a casting seam in the case that runs over the top of the cooler line fitting area like a rainbow. These are the easiest ways to id a 1987 and later if it is removed from the vehicle.

I want to say that mine is a three lug, I'll have to double check with my buddy that just helped me putting on the new flex plate, but I want to say that is what it was.

An original 85 will have been 6 lug, however, a converter builder can build a 3 lug diesel converter so you may still have the proper stall and internals if it is rebuilt. There should be a series of the number 4 stamped around the circumfurance of the converter on an original diesel converter cover. However, it is possible to modify a #6 cover to the same fin angle as a #4. If it has a #7 or #5 it is way too high of a stall and should not be used or modified for diesel application.

So just to double check, I assume that whatever core I get will be from a gas engine, and the only thing that I need to worry about changing is the governor, swapping for the one on my current tranny, and getting the correct torque converter?

Did they change the spline output throught the years on these? Someone on another forum said they went from a 27 to a 32 spline output at some point.

That will get you where you need to be. the diesel had different valve body calibration as well but you won't likely find a diesel core and the gas VB will work with your original heavy weight governor

every single one is 27 spline, absolutely no exception EVER in a stock application.

I second everything Greg said. $200.00 isnt bad and it is worth the money on short notice. Confirm with your rebuilder that he is doing the upgrades discussed. Also a corvette or aftermafket servo helps a bit IMO. If you pull this yourself and reinstall it, make sure you read and completely understand how to set your TV cable. Nothing worse than burning up a new tranny. Looks like your headed in the right direction. I will be watching this. I may learn something.:thumb:

Both of the 700's that I blew up, I blew the pump out of them. I believe there is an upgraded pump available, also get a furnace brazed convertor.

Has anyone here put a gasser tranny into a 6.2 diesel? The tranny shop said the wiring connector is different on it. He didn't seen to think it was worth it for my purposes to spend the extra cash and effort. I'm so conflicted:confused:

I looked at two that I have, 1 gas, 1 diesel and the connector is the same. All the plug is for on the 700R is converter lockup. The valve body is calibrated a little differently, but not enough to matter. As far as the tranny shop telling you you dont need to upgrade, I would. There are many who dont and get by, but also many who dont that have early failure. As long as your going to do it, the difference is small compared to possibly doing it twice.

Wiring is the easiest and most fundemental thing to change on any 700R4. If your shop has expressed this opinion then move on to another shop that understands the 700R4 and can be of better service to you.

He said it will work, he was just telling me that he thought the connections were different. He won't be pulling it out or putting it back in, so I just wanted to make sure that the wiring is something fairly simple and easily figured out when I bolt it back in.

Is swapping the governor off of my current 6.2 tranny to the new gasser tranny a simple process that I can do after he rebuilds it? My tranny knowledge is pretty much limited to pulling one down and putting one back in, never done anything with the tranny itself.

After I bolt it back in, would it be worth for me to check with him on the cost of properly adjusting the TV cable to make sure its done correctly? I would hate to adjust it wrong and fry a new rebuild within a few months.

I talked with the tranny shop that has the core for $200 and asked if I can hand pick it, they said they only have one available. I also called about four other tranny shops, only one other shop had one available, and it was for $250. So hopefully the one they have looks pretty decent.

I know I am being a bit of a pain in the ass with this. My tranny knowledge is limited and this it my first diesel, just picked it up in January. I would just hate to not do every bit of research possible, and buy a different tranny and have it rebuilt(cost at at least $1050 with core) and then have it not work how I want or have it be a total PITA to hook up. I appreciate everyone's knowledge and help.

The wiring should be the same for the lockup. You can swap the governer your self, its a simple swap, but as long as your having it rebuilt, just knock the cover off the old trans, pull it out and have your rebuilder put it in when he is reassembling your new tranny. There is a great article on the Bowtie Overdrives website called "TV made easy" or something like that. Read it and then decide if you need someone else to do it. Like the wiring, its pretty simple to do, just needs to be done right. I know how you feel. Not long ago I was in the same boat. Had a blown tranny, had no clue, was intimidated by the whole process. Did alot of reading, asked alot of questions, found a guy like Greg on here that I could pester with a million questions and rebuilt my own. Since then I have rebuilt 7 of them including one for an Ultra4 car that raced the last KOH. Lots of stuff broke on his car but the tranny didnt! Im no rocket scientist so I know you can get through this. Just keep asking questions, reading and you will get there. Oh and an ATSG manual is a great help too. Even though you arn't rebuilding your own tranny, it will give you alot of good insight and understanding of how these trannys work. Do a search for ATSG guide, 700R4. Should be about $20.00. Good luck.
