I have a bone stock 84 k5 with a 700r4, that refuses to shift to second unless it's at WOT, and at about 40-45 mph. I have also gotten it to shift at about 25 by letting off the gas and mashing the pedal several times.
When I come to a stop and try to take off, the tranny stays in second, causing a very sluggish takeoff. I can get it to downshift by, again, mashing the pedal a few times, or manually dropping it into 1st.
This also may or may not have happened after running through mud pits 5 or 6 times, and getting pulled out each time. :doah:

Any ideas? I've been trying to figure this out by myself but haven't found anyone with an identical problem. I am going to drop the pan and replace the fluid today, though I know diddly squat about transmissions.

Well, before you do anything else, make sure the TV cable is adjusted right. If its wrong, you will burn up the tranny real quick.

The adjustment is simple, do a search here on TV cable, and it should show up. The main point, is that when the throttle is at wide open, the cable should have just reached its full travel.

If there is any slack in the cable when you are at the the wide open stop, then it needs adjusting.

pull the governor and check the plastic gear, or take apart and check the springs and valve inside, it must slide smooth in and out.

Thank you both, I'm in class now and will be changing the fluid and filter as well as checking out both of those things in a couple hours.

I think I read that someone makes a brass gear instead of the plastic one, does anyone run this, or think it would be a good idea?

hmm, never heard of the brass gear. prob stick with plastic, or find out why it broke.

I broke a plastic gear just wheeling one time and the trans was fairly new. :dunno::dunno:

and another broke when the tcase broke off the back of the trans :whistle:
