i need to know what a 5 spd from a 1991 chevy with a 4.3 is and if it will work in my truck. i have a 1987 chevy with a 700r4 and a 208. One day the tranny is going to go out (200k) and i would like to replace it with a 5 speed. what options are out there that do not require much adapters to use the stock 208?

let me know what works

geartrag lightduty 5 speed. and if you plan on beating it at all. dont wast your time. and you will need a hydro clutch setup. bellhousing is part of the tranny.

I got the pedals and can get the hydros stuff just would like a 5 speed that would take the place of a 7oor4, and not require expensive adapters to mount my 208 case to.

NV4500. It was available from '92 on in the 3/4 ton and one ton pick-ups.

NP208 and NP241 both bolt right up to it. The only alteration as far as the transfer case is concerned is the input gear. You'll need to swap out the 27 spline input for a 32 spline input gear. This will be the case regardless of which 5 speed you choose.

The NV4500 is a very strong 5 speed with a granny low first gear, and an overdrive.

here is a good pic of the back of the NV4500. You can see the generic GM 6 hole pattern and the 32 spline output.

Go check your current T-case to adaptor and you'll see the same 6 hole pattern. The only small issue is the pattern is not symmetrical, and the NV4500 was never in a truck with a passenger side drop T-case. The 6 hole pattern on the NV4500 is mirrored to what you have. It will require slightly ovalling one hole...

You will need an aftermarket bellhousing, look to Advance Adaptors. Mine was under $400 and came with the clutch fork and boot as well as a dust cover.

Don't forget you'll need a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. Clutch slave, clutch master, shifter and shifter boot, and might need to alter the crossmember.

That's either the Getrag or the NV3500 light duty 5 speed. Pretty marginal tranny as far as strength goes...

Yeah I'm looking at those 3500 photos, the slave is plenty far from the driveshaft, thought that was the problem with the bellhousing?

My 96 has one of those NV3500s and it too has issues, even behind a 4.3L... The thing rattles in 2nd gear, and frequently grinds when you try to downshift into it.

the s10 nv3500 as mentioned in the first post will be a 27 spline output. it just needs the adapter to 6 round for the t-case (most s10's are 5 bolt round). strength aside, it will work just fine and already has a hydro clutch.

now strength, its rated to 300 lbs input torque.
