Hi all,

I've had my '88 k5 blazer for about a year now and I'm now trying to track down some (possibly related) issues - any input appreciated!

- since I got the truck, when driving up long inclines on the freeway, I notice a sudden strong burning smell sometimes when I'm on the throttle fairly hard. It's a strange smell that I don't recognize -- not burning oil. I swapped in a different motor and I'm still getting the smell so I don't think it's coming from the engine.

- the truck sometimes dies when shifting into reverse, or from reverse to drive. This has recently gotten worse - now it dies sometimes when turning the steering wheel. I'm getting a code 42 from the ECU.

- just recently, the truck won't shift into 2nd and 3rd until very high rpm (3500-4000). I checked the TV cable and it seems ok....not entirely sure it's adjusted correctly, but it seems to move in and out OK. I checked the governor gears and they seem to be ok.

Is my transmission toast? Could a dying transmission cause all these symptoms?

What tire size and gear combination are you running?

I would check the adjustment of the TV cable. If that is off, you could be burning up your tranny.

I'm running 35s with stock gears...not ideal. I wasn't able to get the cable adjuster to move - gonna give it another shot now.

Ok with the TV cable disconnected from the throttle body, it still isn't shifting...and it feels like the cable is moving freely.

DON'T DRIVE with the TV cable disconnected!

I drove it about 20 feet in first gear...didn't shift so I shut it off.

if the tv cable isn't SET correctly, you will nuke the trans in short order..

truck off... depress the D button, pull sheath all the way to firewall, release D button, then give it full throttle.. the cable should click out a couple clicks...

I think I need a new cable - the adjuster will hardly move...gonna see if I can take it apart and clean it.

my 86 k5 gets a funny stink when im on the gas for a bit, found its the catalytic converter getting hot, maybe its that instead of the tranny stinking
