I am not real literate on auto transmissions, I really can not stand them, but for the time being thats what I am stuck with in my 84 k5. anyway here is the prob. driving to work last winter (been sitting since then) just left the house going up a very slight incline transmission lost all momentum, like slipping of a clutch, I turn around quickly and head home about a half mile, since I am going down hill slightly i can gain little speed. It has lost take off power in all gears including reverse. here is what i have found. trans fluid has a slight burn smell, and a little dis colored. I have seen auto trans work that smell worse than mine. and also on drivers side of tranny there is a four pin connecter that is not hooked up and wiring is literally melted together aroundd plug. I believe this is for tc. I just flushed tranny completely and dropped the pan, there is about a teaspoon full of debris on magnet. so my question is should I spend the money on new oil and filter about 75 bucks and whats the deal with this 4 pin plug being unhooked, do you think it fried the tranny
 
the plug is for the lock up, so you really only use it to lock 4th
I would check the TV cable and follow the instructions for setting it.
If you can flush the cooler and torque converter great, otherwise take it to a shop and have them flush it. You want everything out of there. New filter and fluid and pray for the best. Can't hurt other than the wallet :D
 
Chances are the trans will not be healed if you had the correct fluid level and lost all forward and reverse gears. That may have been caused by a clogged filter but even if you replace the filter the results will probably be temporary. Having been running around without a functional TCC will overheat the trans in fourth gear, so when you have your trans fixed or replaced be sure the wiring issue is sorted out. If you are going to replace the trans try and find a 1987-1992 model as these are a much stronger unit to start with than the 1984 trans and are a direct interchange when wired properly internally to co-exist with the controls on the 84 model.
 
well I flushed out system yesterday, got about two gallons out, fixed the tc lock up plug, and checked tv cable and it seems close, I scored two gallons of dexron IV heavy duty synthetic from work and bought a new filter, fired it up and slips just like it did before, so I guess its tranny shopping time, mine was rebuilt when I bought it in 2006, dont know how much damage was done, but am looking into a later model 700, for ease of installation, or I found a deal on a sm465 with transfer case. hmmmm?
 
Did the PO get it rebuilt, or did you have it rebuilt when you bought it? If the rebuild only lasted 6-7 years, do not take it back to wherever it was rebuilt because it was rebuilt poorly.

Putting in a sm465 is quite a bit of work, but doable. You have a few options, find all the associated parts, easier in a whole parts truck, find an 85+ for the hydraulic clutch. There's aftermarket hydraulic clutch systems as well, but pricey.

If you want to go the rebuild route, do your homework on reputable trans shops. Can't stress that enough. There are so many monkeys who slap crap together nowadays and have no idea what they're doing.
 
The PO had the trans rebuilt. I git it and still had 12 months with a two year warranty I believe. I paid 1200 bucks for this blazer. the cost of the rebuild. It has been my plow truck every since and a few hunting expeditions. It never sees overdrive, except for going to the gas station or something, I am still looking the cheapest way to fix this. the 465 conversion I may not have time for. Does it need a total rebuild ? I don't know. here are the symptoms again. It slips at take off but the more rpm I give it and the more momentum i gain the less it slips it seems to work a little better the warmer it gets oil does have a slight tint and a slight smell.
 
I had a similar issue with my tranny slipping recently. Adding a Lucas Oil additive worked for almost 2 years and getting the transmission to drive without slipping for the most part as long as I didn't get on the gas too hard. Once it started slipping again though I was SOL and had to get it towed 50 miles back into town. Cheap fix, try the additive....or avoid getting stranded and either rebuild it or get a used one to swap in.
 
that would be worth the 10 bucks for a bottle of lucas, I use mine pretty hard pushing snow, slamming from low to reverse constantly, but I may just try a bottle, it might just get me by until i can save up some funds for a replacement
