Well I have my 27 spline doubler set up already, but I've been searching for a 700R4 for way too long now. I'm debating whether to just go to a SM465. I know I'd have to change the spline count on the doubler so that's one thing I forsee. But the cost of a well built 700 is just making me  . So I'm thinking of going in the direction of a 465/203 with 32 splines thru out. What are your thoughts? As far as price and getting all the parts to put it together?

I say go with the 465. Gotta love the granny gear and the toughness of it.

I hate my 700R4 and would give my left arm for an sm465.

Well you guys are both in Texas , why don't someone just buy a sm465 and some pedals , and swap each other :waytogo:

might as well. it's less than 300 miles between edinburg and san marcos.

i like my 700. people talk a lot of trash about them, but mine is ancient and high mileage and still runs well, on and off road. but, i'm running 33s with 10 botls and don't plan to get bigger tires anytime soon, so your uses may be different. just keep it frosty with a decent cooler and it will last a while.

If you're going to go with a manual on your truck (no worries about cutting sheet metal) why not go with the nv4500? I got mine from a place it Texas for less than a 700R4 would have been.

Since you'de have to break the 203 loose from the doubler anyway, you could just have it drilled to bolt onto the tranny. Plus, you get a granny gear and overdrive! The combo fit's pretty nice in a first gen like yours. Here's a shameless plug for my build thread...

I like my 700. I wouldnt wheel with 3 pedals. When my 700 go's I will throw in my 400. Carbs and clutches are for race cars. FI and autos are for wheelin.

I know that every 465 owner will not agree...........

For an all around trans the 700r4 is hard to beat. Low first gear, overdrive, ability to handle 400 hp quite well and be able to rock crawl with only two feet etc, etc. They are also easier on the rest of the drivetrain compared to a manual trans because of the cushion the torque converter. When properly built they will last as long as they are kept cool and the converter locks up properly.

The advantages of the 465 have been talked at lengths so I won't bother listing them.

What kind of prices have you been getting? You should be able to buy a trans that will work for your power level for around $1,200.00.

I'm not sure what the 465 setup would cost, but it would probably be a little cheaper. It really comes down to what you want because at this point a few hundred dollars shouldn't compromise what you really want.

x2. some stuff that's easy for me is a real pain for my friend in his jeep, partly because he has to do the 3-pedal boogie when i just stomp and steer. and mud is tougher for him, partially because the clutch gets wet and slips, sometimes

i do like my carb for some offroad situations, since i don't have to worry about shorting it out in mud or water crossing, but i would pefer tbi for pretty much every other situation.

no real experiance with either, but if your gonna stay auto why not just get a 400???sure you loose a lil gear in first and overdrive but i got a feeling with thoose 44s you wont need od...the 400 is a easy, simple, and strong tranny right out the box....oh and where is the pole??

With a doubler and a manual there is no 3 foot boogie...hell I don't even use the clutch in the rocks. At 600 rpm it'll idle along at 0.5 mph. If the truck is geared high or the motor has little low end torque i can see having a clutch as a negative...but for our trucks that usually isn't the case.

I vote NV4500 and doubler...:D

700R4 numerical final crawl ratio: 108:1
TH400 numerical final crawl ratio: 87:1

big difference if you ask me. :D

I've always wanted a 465, but since the wife would maybe drive it every once in a while, I thought I'd make it auto. My doubler is already set up for a 27 spline, so I might as well stick with the 700. Anyway, I think I'd rather have an auto in my toy. I guess it's back to the 700. Thanks.

true about the gear ratio but i would almost rater have strength over it any day....thats why the created the klune or the black box...
