So, I finally buttoned up the 700r4/np205 swap in my 73 (originally th350/np203) last night and went for a test drive and the tranny won't shift out of first gear. It fine in first and reverse but I can't get anything else out of it.

After a bunch of research, this seems like a common problem with either a stuck throttle valve of a malfunctioning governor. I am going to pull the pan tomorrow and check the throttle valve and also pull the governor out to check that and hopefully that fixes the issue. I should mention that the TV cable itself was adjusted properly and just to take it out of the loop completely, I disconnected it and still didn't get any shifting.

My question is this, is there ANYTHING else I should check for while I have the pan dropped? Luckily I got a pan with a drain plug but I would really like to only drop it once if I can so I am willing to go through anything I can in there while its off.

This tranny was rebuilt but then sat with no fluid in it for over 6 months before I purchased it (which makes the stuck valve even more likely) so if that would potentially cause issues anywhere else let me know what to look for.

Thanks,
John

Dear Lord, now I'm scared, hahahahaha.

Do I have to remove the valve body to get the TV out? Is it possible to remove the valve body without losing any check balls?

If you have a later year model 700, it has the aux valve body at the rear od the caes, which will hold the separator plate up in position, that's how mine was. There are lots of pics in my thread so if you drop a ball or two, not the end of the world.

I don't think you can fully remove the TV because there is a pin on the topside you have to remove to pull the valve out. I'd pull it out and give a good cleaning, each valve one at a time. You'll be surprised how much crap comes out.

A gauge also helped me in my troubleshooting, and it lets u know that you do in fact have the tv adjusted correctly.

Ok, i have an 89 so it should have the aux. Did you take out and clean all the valves or just the throttle valve?

Yeah you have the later one, so that's good. Just be cautious about the balls getting lost.

I would clean All of them... If you're going to go thru the pain of pulling it, might as well clean them all while in there.
I think I used 3 cans of brake kleen total...yeah prob a bit overboard but I wanted it debris free :)

I've also got an extra valve body with some valves if you're in need.

I didn't have one there either if memory serves, just 2 on the VB side of the sep plate and 3 on the case side.

Edit: blue85s notes say later model were the red ones marked only

Well, i dont know what i did but it worked! Trans is shifting great now. None of the valves seemed stuck or anything but I pulled them all and cleaned everything and it works so I cant complain.

Yea, its definitely time to get out now. I am possible going to do a John Bull run one of the days of memorial weekend if you want in.
