I've seen this on ebay over here. It's advertised as an early 80's 700r4. Is it? Are the early ones ok after a rebuild?( I would put what ever it would need in it) (I know they had a few probs as std) and can it be converted to 4x4 use?
Thanks :)

i see nothing :dunno:

the early 80s 700r4 are only good if the rebuilder did all the upgrades required. not all rebuilders put the all upgrades in them.

'course you didn't....I forgot to attach them! :haha:
Sorry about that!!

So if I rebuilt it , are there parts available to uprate it to a later spec one? And can it be converted to 4 wheel drive use?
Or do you think I should just wait for a late 4 wheel one to turn up?
Thanks.

Some of the tranny builders here can probably comment, but the casting was actually changed in '87 or '88.

I think no matter how hard you try you can't "upgrade" a tranny built before that to the same level as ones after.

Not saying the early ones can't be improved/built strong, but the later ones will come "upgraded" already with some parts.

I would not even bother with that one. The newer ones are so much better to start with. They have a 30 splin input, 10 vane pump axurilty valve body. Look for a casting line near the spot where the coolant lines go into the tranny this is a sign of the newer casting whit good internal parts.
this site has a lot of info

and so does this one

and yes you can convert a 700 to four wheel drive all you need is the 4x4 output shaft GM wants about 120 for them
