My buds 89 pickup,700r4 is stuck in first.He pulled the pan last night ,said everything was fine,no burnt fluid,metal etc.Is there anything simple to look into before he goes for the rebuild? I checked his TV cable,it looked to be adjusted right,but it felt wierd like it did'nt catch until half pedal.

look at the governor gear, its under the small steel cover on the driverside near the rear of the tranny. pull it out, the gear is usually green, blue, or yellow. if its chewed up thats you problem, the gear is about $4.

there is a very light spring up until about half throttle, then a heavier spring takes over. the light spring pretty much is just to return the cable and valve.
