I don't see how the transmission could keep the converter locked when coming to a stop. The solenoid doesn't lock the TCC, it only prevents the lockup hydraulic pressure from being vented to the pan. That pressure comes from the valve body and no stock pre-TBI valve body will allow pressure there in 1st gear. The clunk is probably the transmission downshifting with the clutch locked.

Now with a reverse-manual or any aftermarket valve body, all bets are off.

I wouldn't use the TCC for compression braking either. It's too weak for that. I know that mine has great compression braking in low range and either 1 or 2, but this might be partly from the SuperTrans Kit. I think the people who say you can't get compression braking from an automatic tranny don't have a low low-range and a good 1st gear.

My truck doesnt die when I come to a stop but does clunk pretty good. Im starting to look at this kit pretty hard http://www.jegs.com/p/B%26M/748070/10002/-1 It may be a bit. expensive but I sure like the adjustability of it. You can set the speed when you want it to lock up. I also like it because I typically drive around in 3rd in the city and would like it to lock up over certain speeds. I understand it also unlocks when you hit the brake.
