I don't see how the transmission could keep the converter locked when coming to a stop. The solenoid doesn't lock the TCC, it only prevents the lockup hydraulic pressure from being vented to the pan. That pressure comes from the valve body and no stock pre-TBI valve body will allow pressure there in 1st gear. The clunk is probably the transmission downshifting with the clutch locked.
Now with a reverse-manual or any aftermarket valve body, all bets are off.
I wouldn't use the TCC for compression braking either. It's too weak for that. I know that mine has great compression braking in low range and either 1 or 2, but this might be partly from the SuperTrans Kit. I think the people who say you can't get compression braking from an automatic tranny don't have a low low-range and a good 1st gear.
