Will changing the fluid after so many years damage anything internally?

Changing the fluid and filter is ok. Do not flush it, that will likely lead to problems.
As fluid gets old it's properties break down and diminishes its ability to perform the multiple duties required of it. I am a strong proponent of the flushing methods to extract and replace as much of the old fluid as possible to restore the trans to peak performance. Stories of transmissions damaged by a flush usually start out with a trans that had troubles to begin with.
