71K5 - BP71K5's Just for fun build

Steal away. I'll warn you that it still gets pretty hot in there.

On a related note, I switched to an 85-140 synthetic gear oil in the transfer cases and rear end. I did a 100 mile trip out to pick up a tent trailer and had zero oil blowing out of the vents when I got back. First time that's ever not happened. Cool!

Small update. I redesigned my 205 breather system to be much simpler.

If you remember my problems, the original breather hose would always spit lube out even under normal driving. Maybe is because the case is clocked, or just old, who knows.

The pto cover now has an angled fitting welded on to hold a brass hose fitting that lets oil drain back down. This allowed me to run the original breather hose down to a tee near that fitting and then run a single breather hose up from there. You can see both brass fittings in the closeup pic.

So far its working really well. No lube is leaking from that portion at least.

Fine tuning......tweaking, refining.

Sounds like you are just about fully sorted now and ready for MOAB.

What's left?

What's left?

I realized putting a 35" spare in the truck left almost no room for things like clothing. Now that we got 4 people going, i had to fix that. :) So last night I finished welding a spare tire mount to the camping trailer (its ugly so I wont post pictures) and now I just need to redo the gas tank skid plate and adjust the latch on the passenger door so my wife can get in/out easier.

Todays the last possible day for tweaking since I have a business trip on monday and get back the day before we leave for vacation. Our plan is to wind our way up the colorado river from the south. Anyone have recommendations for camping spots? The plan is to drive no more than 4 hours per day so we have time to relax at the different locations, go swimming, hike, etc.

Our first leg of the trip starts in Barstow, Ca at the KOA campground. We couldnt take the desert heat anymore. This place has a pool, showers, and air conditioned bathrooms! Were roughing it.

I'd give some serious money to be sittin there in the shade with a cold beer right now. Hard to beat camping with amenities. Keep us updated.

I'll post up some pictures in the blazerbash threads. Moab has been super cool for the first day. The kids enjoyed hells revenge.

Forget waiting.

Heres Bryce canyon. Spectacular views.

Then my tent trailer tounge broke with the weight of my spare tire. Spent half the day having thebthing towed to a repair shop and then re-welded.

Then a teaser shot of moab. There is a literal colony of first gens here, most of them from Michigan! We all ran hells revenge as part of a wheelin class taught by Steven Watson. We started getting thunder and lightning at the top of the trail which made for some good pics and video. Check out a future thread in the blazerbash section for those pics.

Convoy of 1st Gen's = Amazing, cant wait to see pictures of all that perfection. Must have made all the 73+ owners jealous, ha ha.

Dude that's awesome! I don't think I've ever seen more than two first gen's in one place before. I'd love to get in on some of that action:thumb:

Update: 12/27/11- Preparing for sliders.

I've been spending some time around the house preparing to squeeze the blazer into our small garage for some minor surgery. It currently sits about 6" too high to fit through the door but a combination of airing down to ~9psi and removing the hard top looks like it'll allow it to squeeze in. I've had to rearrange the entire yard to find a spot the hardtop can sit for the winter, which has involved rebuilding a fence to include a gate, and then some stands in the backyard to keep it off the ground so ants don't build any nests inside it.

There are really three reasons for the surgery: one is the sliders, and two is this little area of the floor behind the a-pillar cage plate that traps water and dirt.

It drives me crazy so it has to change. The plan is to copy several others and run the cage bar through the dash into the footwell. This will let me tie some supports on the other side of the footwell into the sliders and body mounts.

The third reason is that the body is still sagging enough that my doors are crashing into the windshield. To fix this, the rockers will be coming off and the body will be forced into proper compliance while the sliders are going in. More to come soon...

Nice Brian..

Are you planing on just moving the entire cage forward, or does this require some new A pillars to be bent up? Are you going back with the rocker box's at all, or just somehow tying the body, sliders and frame in, all as one?

I think I can cut the front portion of the cage forward of the B-pillar and shift that forward and then splice it back together. I will need some new straight sections, but no bends if I'm lucky.

I may ditch the rocker boxes, but it's not for sure yet. I bashed one on a log in Hollister so it needs repairing. They hang down kinda low and are not very strong against a rock or log so the plan so far is to at least section in a big rectangular tube as a slider and see if that tube can replace the rocker box. Too soon to tell.

Update 01/20/12: Lost my rocker box

I decided that the rocker boxes would prevent me from getting a decently strong set of sliders so out it came.

Heres the passenger side damage. You can see it has bent up the outer rocker cover. Luckily my first welding job was inadequate so the cover broke free from the rocker box lip pretty easily. I need to save the outer rockers so this will need to be carefully repaired.

Also went ahead and cut the A pillar portion of the cage free. No going back now.

Once all the support is removed I can adjust all my door gaps correctly and start the rebuild process. I've been trying to spend at least an hour or so every couple days at night disassembling or cutting. I've found spending frequent but short amounts of time kinda helps things move forward without neglecting my other duties at home.
