Does anyone know the type of differential that came standard on the 72 Blazer V8's? Was is it locking, posi, etc.?

Stock was most likely an open diff. I'm not sure they offered traction control in the 1/2 ton trucks.

Is it worth changing to a Mechanical locking differential? I don't know much about differentials. I am in the middle of a K5 Build and I know I might do some towing (boat). But surely the stock open differential is plenty..I will mainly be cruising and occasional trail riding. The Blazer 4wd so going to a locking differential might be overkill?
Mine had a posi and 3.73's. It was listed as an option on my RPO sticker.

Well there you go, they did offer it. Whether you need one or not depends on what you plan to drive over, but open differentials can take you lots of places. Use whatever you have until you know whether you need something extra.

That is excellent advice! It is easy to blow a chunk of change on parts you don't really need.
